About Idi di Maggio
Oglianico returns to the Middle Ages
The Idi di Maggio Festival is the flagship event of Oglianico, a small village in the Metropolitan City of Turin, in the heart of the Canavese and the Piedmont region. Every year, during the first ten days of May, the entire town transforms into a medieval village: the beautiful fortified ricetto — one of the best-preserved in Piedmont, featuring its tower-gate entrance and the chapel of Sant'Evasio — becomes the natural stage for a re-enactment rooted in the ancient municipal statutes of 1352.
A tradition spanning over forty years
Reaching its 44th edition in 2026, the Idi di Maggio Festival is one of the longest-running historical re-enactments in the area. Born from a desire to celebrate the village's identity and its extraordinary architectural heritage, the event involves historical groups, flag-throwers, musicians, dancers, and the entire community, under the patronage of the Piedmont Region, the Regional Council, the Metropolitan City of Turin, and the Municipality of Oglianico.
The re-enactment program
The festival takes place over several days between late April and the first ten days of May, featuring several unmissable events:
- Posa del Maggio (Raising of the May Tree): the opening ritual involving the planting of the symbol of spring and the inauguration of the "With Water, Iron, and Fire" exhibition on ironworking.
- Calendimaggio (May 1st): the official presentation of historical characters, the arming of the Abbadia de' Compagni, and the Flag-Throwing Tournament.
- Maggiando: evenings in the taverns with traditional dishes and Occitan dances in the village.
- Ricetto diVino: tastings of local wines within the walls of the ricetto and guided tours of the chapel of Sant'Evasio.
- Medieval Dinner and Receptum: immersive banquets and evenings accessible in period costume.
- Grand Finale: the great medieval fair featuring a costumed mass, market, jugglers and acrobats, the "Messer Chef" medieval cooking tournament, and the concluding Calata del Maggio (Lowering of the May Tree) ritual.
Atmosphere and gastronomy
Throughout the festival, the village is filled with taverns, medieval market stalls, artisans at work, and roving performances. Cuisine is a highlight, with dishes inspired by ancient recipes served in costume and accompanied by musicians and dancers. It is the perfect opportunity to discover Oglianico, its ricetto, and the traditions of the Canavese in an authentic and welcoming setting.

Idi di Maggio 2026: la 44ª edizione
L'edizione 2026 della Festa delle Idi di Maggio si è svolta a Oglianico dal 1° al 10 maggio, preceduta dalla tradizionale posa del Maggio e dall'inaugurazione della mostra "Con acqua ferro e fuoco" dedicata alla lavorazione del ferro.
Il 1° maggio il Calendimaggio ha aperto i festeggiamenti con la presentazione dei personaggi storici, la presa d'armi e il Torneo della Bandiera. Nei giorni seguenti si sono alternati "Maggiando" con le taverne, le danze occitane del gruppo Li Barmenk, il "Ricetto diVino" con le degustazioni e le visite alla cappella di Sant'Evasio. L'8 maggio la Cena Medievale e il 9 il "Receptum" hanno offerto serate immersive in costume.
Il gran finale del 10 maggio ha riportato l'intero borgo nel Medioevo con la messa in costume, la sagra medievale, il mercato, gli spettacoli, la decima edizione del torneo di cucina "Messer Chef" e il rito conclusivo della Calata del Maggio. Manifestazione a ingresso gratuito, con patrocinio di Regione Piemonte, Città Metropolitana di Torino e Comune di Oglianico.

- Anteprima: posa del Maggio (ore 14.30) e inaugurazione mostra "Con acqua ferro e fuoco"; cena d'auspicio con l'Abbadia de' Compagni.
- 1° maggio — Calendimaggio: dalle 15.00 presentazione dei personaggi storici, presa d'armi, posa del Maggio, nundine e Torneo della Bandiera; ore 19.30 cena a Casa Gilda; ore 21.30 spettacolo di danza "Ben ben veni magg".
- 2 maggio: "Maggiando" con taverne; ore 21.00 danze occitane "Li Barmenk".
- 3 maggio: "Ricetto diVino" con degustazioni (ore 15.00) e visita alla Cappella di Sant'Evasio.
- 8 maggio: annuncio con chiarine e tamburi (ore 18.00); Cena Medievale (ore 19.45).
- 9 maggio: "Receptum", serata in costume (ore 19.00).
- 10 maggio — Gran finale: dalle 10.00 sagra medievale, Santa Messa in costume, Torneo della Bandiera, mercato e spettacoli, torneo di cucina "Messer Chef" (premiazioni ore 18.00); in serata spettacolo e Calata del Maggio.

Getting there
Oglianico is located in the Canavese region, about 35 km north of Turin. By car, it can be reached via the A5 Turin-Aosta motorway (Rivarolo/San Giorgio exits) or the SP460. By train, the reference station is Rivarolo Canavese on the Canavesana Railway line, with onward travel by bus or car.
Admission and bookings
Access to the event and performances is generally free. The themed dinners (Auspice Dinner, Medieval Dinner) and some taverns require reservations: call +39 348 0719794 or +39 0124 243674. Updated information is available on the website and social media channels of the Pro Loco Oglianico APS.
Tips
Comfortable clothing is recommended for visiting the ricetto and its cobbled streets. For the "Receptum" evenings, entry is reserved for those wearing medieval costumes.
