About Regatta of the Maritime Republics

When the Historical Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics returns to Amalfi, the coast transforms into a grand theater overlooking the sea. Four eight-oared galleons—representing Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa, and Venice—compete over a two-thousand-meter open-water course between Capo di Vettica and Marina Grande, preceded by a historical pageant of three hundred costumed figures marching from Atrani to the steps of the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea. Established in 1956 and hosted on a rotating basis by the four cities, the 70th edition took place in Amalfi in May 2025.

The rowing challenge of the four Maritime Republics

The Historical Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics is the annual challenge between Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa, and Venice, the four cities that dominated Mediterranean trade routes during the Middle Ages. The concept was born in the late 1940s from the vision of Pisan knight Mirro Chiaverini, with the first edition held in Pisa in 1956. Since then, the event has rotated annually among the four cities, ensuring each hosts it every four years. When it is Amalfi's turn, the most famous town on the Amalfi Coast (Province of Salerno, Campania) transforms for four days into a stage on the sea.

Two thousand meters in open water

In Amalfi, the race features a unique characteristic: it is the only one of the four venues where the galleons race in open water. The two-thousand-meter course runs along the coast, starting at Capo di Vettica and finishing in front of Marina Grande, under the gaze of thousands of spectators lining the promenade, beaches, and terraces. While Genoa races in the harbor, Pisa on the Arno River, and Venice in the San Marco Basin, only in Amalfi do the long swells and Tirreno winds come into play, making the outcome unpredictable until the final stroke.

The four galleons and their figureheads

Each city fields a galleon bearing the colors and symbols of its Republic:

  • Amalfi - blue galleon, figurehead with a winged horse.
  • Genoa - white galleon, figurehead with the dragon of Saint George.
  • Pisa - red galleon, figurehead with the imperial eagle.
  • Venice - green galleon, figurehead with the winged lion of Saint Mark.

The boats are built to identical structural specifications, measuring about fifteen meters and weighing at least 760 kilograms empty. Once made of wood, they are now constructed from fiberglass. Each is manned by eight fixed-seat rowers and a coxswain, chosen from Italy's top rowing athletes. The trophy at stake is a gold and silver galley supported by four sea horses, featuring the emblems of the four Republics.

The historical pageant: three hundred participants

For many, the most spectacular moment is not the race itself but the historical pageant held on the eve of the event. Approximately three hundred costumed participants evoke the society and historical figures of the four Republics. Amalfi showcases its golden age of the 11th century, Genoa features the crusader Guglielmo Embriaco, Pisa highlights the heroine Kinzica de' Sismondi, and Venice commemorates the donation of Cyprus by Caterina Cornaro in 1489. In the Amalfi editions, the procession starts in Atrani and winds along the coastal road to the steps of the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea, concluding amidst drums, flag-wavers, and crowds watching from the windows.

A weekend of city-wide events

Surrounding the regatta, the Municipality of Amalfi builds a multi-day program including exhibitions and conferences at the Arsenale della Repubblica—the ancient medieval shipyard that now houses the Compass and Duchy Museum—concerts in Piazza Duomo, the women's regatta along the coast between Marmorata and Atrani, and fireworks over the bay. The men's race on Sunday is broadcast live by Rai, which has covered the event for decades.

When the regatta returns to Amalfi

Due to the rotation, the race is not held on the Amalfi Coast every year. Amalfi hosted the 2022 edition, won by the home crew, and the 70th edition in May 2025, which went to Genoa. The 71st edition took place in Pisa on June 2, 2026, and the 72nd is expected in Venice in 2027. An official date for the event's return to Amalfi has not yet been announced. However, the city remains a protagonist every year with its blue galleon and the men's and women's crews training between Marina Grande and Atrani.

Regatta of the Maritime Republics — edition 2026

In 2026, the Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics did not stop in Amalfi. Due to the rotation between the four cities, the 71st edition was held in Pisa on June 2, 2026, on the Arno River, with Venice winning the men's race. Amalfi participated with its blue galleon, led by coxswain and coach Vincenzo di Palma, and a women's crew. No official date has been announced for the event's return to the Amalfi Coast.

In 2026, the race was held in Pisa

The event changes venue every year, and in 2026 it was Pisa's turn. On June 2, it hosted the 71st edition on the Arno, the only river course in the circuit. At 3:15 PM, the women's regatta took place from Ponte Solferino to Scalo Renaioli, followed by the historical pageant with over three hundred participants along the Lungarni at 3:45 PM, and the men's race at 5:30 PM with the award ceremony at Giardino Scotto, broadcast live on Rai. Venice won the race.

Amalfi competing away from home

The Municipality of Amalfi (Province of Salerno, Campania) accompanied its crews to Pisa, who train year-round between Marina Grande and Atrani. For the local public on the coast, the last home event remains the 70th edition of May 2025. Currently, there are no official dates for a new edition hosted in Amalfi, while the 72nd edition is expected in Venice in 2027. The date indicated here for 2026 is a provisional reference linked to the usual period of the Amalfi editions and not an official announcement from the organization.

Practical information — Regatta of the Maritime Republics

Getting there

Amalfi has no train station. You can arrive by train in Salerno or Naples and continue by bus along the SS 163 Amalfitana road, or, more conveniently during the regatta, by ferry from the piers of Salerno, Positano, Sorrento, or Capri directly to the port of Amalfi. During the Amalfi editions, the SS 163 road is closed to traffic for a few hours during the historical pageant and the race: in 2025, the closure was from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Saturday and from 11:50 AM to 1:50 PM on Sunday.

Parking

Parking spaces in the center of Amalfi are limited and fill up quickly during peak days. It is advisable to leave your car in Salerno or Vietri sul Mare and complete the journey by sea, taking advantage of the extra evening ferry services provided by the shipping companies.

Tickets

The official program of the last Amalfi edition did not require entry tickets: the historical pageant, women's regatta, concerts in Piazza Duomo, and the main race were all freely accessible from the promenade, the Cathedral steps, and the beaches of Marina Grande and Atrani.

Tips

For the historical pageant, it is best to find a spot along the Atrani-Amalfi route at least an hour in advance. For the race, the best vantage points are the pier and the promenade near the finish line. Hotels on the coast should be booked well in advance; more affordable alternatives can be found in Maiori, Minori, and Vietri sul Mare, which are connected to Amalfi by bus and ferry.
