A procession of faith and memory re-enacting the Passion of Christ through the streets of Frignano
The Historical-Liturgical Procession of Maria SS. Addolorata is one of the most deeply felt and defining events in the municipality of Frignano, in the province of Caserta, Campania. For nearly eight decades, during the Lenten season, the entire town unites for this appointment that weaves together popular devotion, collective memory, and historical re-enactment. It is not merely a religious procession, but a grand living performance involving hundreds of Frignano residents of all ages, united in telling the story of the Passion of Christ.
The procession was founded in 1947 by the then-parish priest of the Church of Santi Nazario e Celso, Monsignor Cesare Copersino. From that initial devotional seed, the event has grown year after year to become a true cultural heritage of the region, recognized and supported by the Campania Region. The organization is managed by the Addolorata Committee, which reports to the parish of Santi Nazario e Celso: preparations begin several months in advance, involving fundraising, costume maintenance, and long rehearsals.
The heart of the event lies in the living tableaux drawn from the Gospel, which retrace the life of Christ up to Calvary. The dramatized scenesโfrom the condemnation to the crucifixion, and the moving encounter between the Addolorata and Jesusโcome to life thanks to about five hundred participants in period costumes. The procession reconstructs three intertwined worlds: the Jewish, the Christian, and the Roman, with meticulous attention to detail, costumes, and settings. Horses, Roman chariots, a large choir, and bearers of the symbols of the Passion parade through the streets, while children participate by carrying the instruments of the martyrdom.
The procession winds through the center of Frignano, traditionally starting from Piazza Mazzini and traveling along the main streets before concluding in Piazza della Repubblica. Along the route, the community gathers around the procession in an atmosphere where the sacred and the historical, the liturgical and the popular, merge into one of the most authentic customs of the Campanian tradition.
The 79th Historical-Liturgical Procession of Maria SS. Addolorata was held on Sunday, March 22, 2026, once again confirming the strong bond between Frignano and its most iconic tradition. Participant registrations had opened in the preceding weeks at the parish Caritas, involving men, women, and children from the community.
In 2026, the procession once again featured the living tableaux inspired by the Gospel, with about five hundred costumed participants, horses, and Roman chariots, winding through the streets of the town up to Piazza della Repubblica. The edition was extensively documented by the local press, with hundreds of photographs and the usual live broadcast on official social media channels.
The procession takes place in the historic center of Frignano (CE), in Campania, traditionally starting from Piazza Mazzini and arriving at Piazza della Repubblica.
