The Val Casies Hay Barn Festival, celebrating South Tyrolean farming traditions, music, and cuisine
The Gsiesa Heistodlfest (German for "Hay Barn Festival") is one of the most cherished traditions in the Val Casies/Gsiesertal, nestled in the heart of the Puster Valley, in the province of Bolzano (South Tyrol). Organized by the Gsieser Natur- & Kulturverein in collaboration with local rural youth and women's associations, the event celebrates the ancient customs and heritage of mountain farming at the end of every summer.
The festival takes place in San Martino/St. Martin, a village in the municipality of Valle di Casies/Gsies, at the Interessentschaftshütte Ribisen festival barn along the Gsieserstraße. Traditionally held on a late August evening, the festivities kick off at 6:00 PM and continue late into the night with hearty food and music.
At the heart of the event is South Tyrolean farmhouse cuisine: wholesome, hearty specialties prepared according to age-old recipes and served in the convivial setting of the barn. The festival is designed to bring the entire valley community and visitors together in a spirit of joy and respect for rural roots.
The soundtrack is provided by local ensembles: the San Martino Bohemian band opens the evening, while the Nia Genua group takes the stage later on to keep the energy high. Guests are encouraged to wear traditional attire (dirndl and lederhosen), which truly completes the authentic festival atmosphere.
The Gsiesa Heistodlfest is not just for adults; a rich entertainment program is provided for children, making the evening perfect for the whole family. Admission is free and no registration is required, making it easily accessible to both locals and tourists vacationing in Val Casies.
Tucked away in one of the most authentic and lesser-known side valleys of South Tyrol, Val Casies keeps its German-speaking farming traditions alive. The Gsiesa Heistodlfest is one of the best opportunities to discover this heritage of customs, music, and gastronomy, set against a stunning natural backdrop of meadows, mountain farms, and peaks.
The Gsiesa Heistodlfest 2026 is scheduled for Friday, August 28, 2026, starting at 6:00 PM at the Interessentschaftshütte Ribisen festival barn in Valle di Casies/Gsies (South Tyrol).
The evening features specialties of South Tyrolean farmhouse cuisine, musical accompaniment by the San Martino Bohemian band, and, later in the evening, the Nia Genua group. A rich entertainment program is planned for children. Guests are invited to wear traditional attire. Admission is free and no registration is required.
