The premier international showcase for ceramic art in Grottaglie
The Mediterranean Contemporary Ceramics Competition is one of Italy's most prestigious events dedicated to the art of ceramics. Established in 1971, it takes place annually in Grottaglie, in the province of Taranto, in the heart of Puglia: a town whose identity has been inextricably linked to clay working for over five centuries, home to one of Italy's most famous Ceramics Quarters, featuring more than seventy active artisan workshops.
The exhibition is held in the halls of Castello Episcopio, a medieval fortress that overlooks the historic center of Grottaglie and also houses the Ceramics Museum. The castle's ancient architecture provides a stunning backdrop for contemporary works, creating a continuous dialogue between tradition and artistic research.
Each edition attracts hundreds of entries from all continents: from Italy to China, Japan to Argentina, as well as South Korea, Greece, France, Mexico, Israel, and the Netherlands. An international jury selects the finalist works, which are exhibited to the public throughout the summer and autumn seasons. The first prize includes the acquisition of the winning piece for the permanent collection of the Ceramics Museum in Grottaglie.
The competition is much more than an exhibition: it is a cultural project that enhances the identity of the town of Grottaglie and projects it into a contemporary, international dimension. The artistic direction is entrusted to prominent figures in the history of art and ceramic design. For visitors, the exhibition is also the perfect opportunity to explore the town, its caves, its churches, and above all the workshops of the Ceramics Quarter, where master potters continue techniques passed down through generations.
The 2026 edition of the Mediterranean Contemporary Ceramics Competition opens on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at 6:30 PM at Castello Episcopio in Grottaglie and remains open to the public until October 18, 2026. There are 81 works on display, selected from 410 entries received from artists across 48 countries, including Italy, China, Japan, Argentina, South Korea, Mexico, Greece, France, Israel, and the Netherlands.
The major innovation is the Grand Work section, dedicated to ceramic sculptures and installations designed to engage with urban space and the city's architectural fabric, with a prize of 10,000 euros. Alongside this, the historic awards remain: the First Prize Mediterranean (5,000 euros with museum acquisition), the Solo Exhibition prize (2,000 euros), and the Artist Residency for under 35s. The artistic direction is entrusted to Lisa Hockemeyer, a historian of art and ceramic design. The initiative is promoted by the Municipality of Grottaglie with the patronage of the Puglia Region.
Grottaglie is located in the province of Taranto, Puglia. By car, it is accessible via the SS7 and SS Appia roads; the Grottaglie train station is served by the Taranto-Brindisi line. The nearest airports are Brindisi-Casale and Bari-Palese.
The works are exhibited at Castello Episcopio, in the historic center of Grottaglie, which also houses the Ceramics Museum.
We recommend combining your visit to the exhibition with a walk through the Ceramics Quarter, where you can visit artisan workshops and purchase handmade pieces.
