The medieval re-enactment of Frederick II of Swabia and the challenge between the four districts
In the heart of Messapian Apulia, perched on three hills between Brindisi and Taranto, the town of Oria preserves one of the most evocative historical re-enactments in Southern Italy. The Palio di Oria, organized by the Pro Loco di Oria APS, is inspired by a real event from 1225: when Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, awaiting his wedding to Isabella (Yolande) of Brienne, daughter of the King of Jerusalem, established his court in the city and instituted a tournament between the city's districts. From that ancient episode, the event was born in 1967, and it still represents the tourist and cultural soul of Oria today.
The most spectacular moment of the event is the grand Historical Pageant, which sees over 800 participants in precious period costumes parade through the streets of the historic center: ladies and knights, jesters and musicians, men-at-arms and flag-wavers accompany the solemn entrance of Emperor Frederick II. The Herald proclaims the Tournament Edict, and the city returns to its medieval atmosphere for a night, amidst torches, drums, and clarions.
The competitive heart of the Palio is the Tournament of the Districts, which features a challenge between the four historic quarters of the city, each with its own colors and symbols:
The districts compete for the coveted Palio in five collective medieval-inspired trials that require strength, endurance, and skill: the Ram Transport, the Bridge Race, the Barrel Trial, the Chest Drag, and the Pole Climb. The competition traditionally takes place at the Campo dei Padri Rogazionisti and determines the winning district.
In the days leading up to the tournament, Oria comes alive with the Medieval Nights: historical camps, artisan workshops, themed dinners and taverns, street performances, flag-throwing displays, and re-enactments that involve the alleys of the ancient center and the imposing Swabian Castle that dominates the town.
The Palio di Oria takes place in the Municipality of Oria, in the Province of Brindisi, in the Apulia region, between late July and early August, with the highlight of the Historical Pageant and the Tournament of the Districts on the second weekend of the month. The event is organized by the Pro Loco di Oria APS with the involvement of the four district committees.
The 2026 edition of the Palio di Oria marks the 59th edition of the re-enactment, the last one before the prestigious 60-year milestone expected in 2027. The celebrations are no longer limited to the traditional two days, but extend throughout the summer period with a series of initiatives that animate the historic center of Oria from the first days of August.
The highlight remains the weekend of August 8 and 9, 2026: Saturday is dedicated to the grand Historical Pageant with over 800 costumed participants and the entrance of Emperor Frederick II, while on Sunday the Tournament of the Districts takes place with the five trials that award the Palio. In view of this edition, the Pro Loco has opened the selection for the actor who will play Frederick II of Swabia.
The detailed program with times and appointments for individual evenings is published by the Pro Loco di Oria on the official website paliodioria.net.
