The spring fair of plants and crafts in the village of Pennabilli
The Fiera del Mercato Verde is one of the most beloved spring events in the Rimini hinterland. It takes place in the historic center of Pennabilli, a charming village in the Valmarecchia in the Province of Rimini, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna on the border with Marche and Tuscany. For an entire day, the streets and squares of the town fill with colors, scents, and voices, transforming into a large open-air garden.
The heart of the fair is the large floral and horticultural exhibition: ornamental, fruit, flower, and vegetable garden plants, roses, bonsai, succulents, aromatic and medicinal herbs, and every variety capable of satisfying garden and horticulture enthusiasts. Alongside the nurserymen, there is space for agricultural and garden equipment and typical products of the Valmarecchia: cured meats, cheeses, sweets, ancient grains, and artisanal pasta. A section is reserved for artisans of the valley, who offer crochet work, costume jewelry, soaps, wooden objects, vases, paintings, and various creations.
In addition to the market, the day offers a rich calendar of cultural and environmental initiatives. Among the proposals in recent years: workshops on botanical drawing, mindfulness and meditation practices, moments of used clothing exchange focused on sustainability, and workshops dedicated to natural fermentation. The MUSSS – Naturalistic Museum of Pennabilli opens its doors with free visits particularly suitable for families and children, often coinciding with the provincial initiative Fattorie Aperte (Open Farms).
A special section is dedicated to gastronomy: the restaurants in the historic center offer themed menus based on flowers, wild herbs, and seasonal vegetables. Zucchini flowers, nettles, borage, strigoli, fava beans, artichokes, peas, and mushrooms become the protagonists of dishes that tell the story of the simple yet refined cuisine of the Romagna Apennines.
The fair is organized by the Pro Loco of Pennabilli with the patronage of the Municipality of Pennabilli. The village, linked to the figure of the poet Tonino Guerra and famous for its "places of the soul," offers a perfect setting for an event that combines greenery, craftsmanship, and popular tradition, in a territory that lives by the slow and authentic rhythm of the Valmarecchia.
On Sunday, May 10, 2026, the historic center of Pennabilli hosted a new edition of the Mercato Verde Fair. Among the village streets, stalls offered ornamental and fruit plants, aromatic herbs, garden equipment, typical products, and crafts from the Valmarecchia. The day was enlivened by workshops and activities: the botanical drawing workshop "Nature in a Line" with Valentina Grossi (10:00 AM-1:00 PM), mindfulness and meditation practices with Stefano Francoia, the used clothing exchange "Scambietti" from 2:00 PM, and a kombucha workshop with Bianca Belli at 5:30 PM. The MUSSS – Naturalistic Museum offered free visits from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Restaurants in the center offered themed menus based on flowers and wild herbs.
Pennabilli is located in the upper Valmarecchia, in the Province of Rimini. By car, it can be reached from the SS258 Marecchiese from Rimini (about 50 km) or from the E45 by exiting towards Valmarecchia. The nearest train station is Rimini, connected to the village by intercity buses.
Admission to the fair is free. Some workshops may require mandatory booking.
The event takes place in the historic center, largely pedestrianized: comfortable footwear is recommended. It is an excellent opportunity to also visit the MUSSS – Naturalistic Museum and the "places of the soul" of Pennabilli.
