The historic carnival of Patti featuring allegorical floats, masked groups, and the Don Lio mask
The Great Historical Carnival of Patti is one of the most deeply rooted and anticipated traditions in the Tyrrhenian area of the province of Messina. Organized by the Municipality of Patti, in Sicily, the event attracts thousands of people every year, including residents, families, and curious visitors from neighboring towns, transforming the city center into a colorful open-air stage.
The heart of the event lies in the parades of large papier-mâché allegorical floats, the result of months of work by local artisans and craftsmen in city workshops. Alongside the floats, masked groups parade, often consisting of dozens of costumed performers who bring the procession to life with dances, choreography, and music. The traditional route starts from Lungomare Zuccarello in Patti Marina, near Piazzale Nioto, and winds its way up to the historic center, ending at Piazza Mario Sciacca.
The icon of the Patti carnival is Don Lio "Simenzaru" (in local dialect "don Liu u siminsazu"), a little man with clown makeup and a nose, long mustache, polka-dot jacket, and top hat, who has represented the ironic and popular spirit of the festival for generations. His figure appears on posters and ideally accompanies every edition of the event.
The program is not limited to the grand parades: the event also includes the Children's Carnival, featuring entertainment, games, cotton candy, hot chocolate, and music in Piazza Mario Sciacca, as well as musical performances and evening DJ sets that extend the festivities. It is an event designed to involve all generations in a true spirit of community.
With over sixty editions behind it, the Great Historical Carnival of Patti represents a key identity marker for the community of Patti, a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Messina. The event should not be confused with the distinct Great Historical Carnival of San Piero Patti, a neighboring municipality that organizes its own carnival festival.
The 2026 edition, the sixty-second, took place from February 12 to 22. The program included the Children's Carnival on Saturday, February 14, in Piazza Mario Sciacca, with entertainment, cotton candy, hot chocolate, and music, the two grand parades of allegorical floats and masked groups on Sunday, February 15, and Tuesday, February 17, and the grand finale on Sunday, February 22.
Among the announced novelties, the placement of a papier-mâché panel at the entrance to the city, near the motorway exit, to promote the Patti carnival tradition, and the carnival anthem presented during the Christmas events. The procession followed the usual route from Lungomare Zuccarello, in Patti Marina, to the heart of the center in Piazza Mario Sciacca.
Patti can be reached by car via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (Patti-Gioiosa Marea exit). By train, the Patti-San Piero Patti station is on the Messina-Palermo Tyrrhenian line, a short distance from Lungomare Zuccarello. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa.
The parades follow the route from Lungomare Zuccarello (Patti Marina) to Piazza Mario Sciacca, in the city center.
The event takes place outdoors along the city streets and is free and open to everyone.
