Masked parades, music, and tradition in the hexagonal square of Grammichele
The Grammichele Carnival is the most vibrant winter event in Grammichele, a town in the province of Catania located in the heart of the Calatino region, in Sicily. During the festivities, the town center transforms into a large open-air theater, filled with masks, confetti, music, and joy that engage the entire population.
The focal point of the event is the extraordinary Piazza Carlo Maria Carafa, the grand hexagonal square that serves as the urban symbol of Grammichele. The city is world-renowned for its hexagonal layout, designed after the 1693 earthquake that destroyed the ancient town of Occhiolร ; the town's streets radiate geometrically from the central square. It is in this unique setting that the parades, stages, and Carnival shows come to life.
The program offers a variety of activities for all ages: masked parades with costumed groups, performances by local dance schools, entertainment and dancing for children, evening DJ sets, and the highly anticipated awards ceremony for the best masks and participating groups. Traditionally, the competition categories include allegorical floats, costumed groups, schools, and individual masks, with a prize pool rewarding the creativity and dedication of the participants.
Organized by the Euforia Eventi e Cultura association, founded by Matteo Privitera and Luca Salafia, and held under the patronage of the Municipality of Grammichele, the Grammichele Carnival is above all a participatory event, uniting citizens, associations, schools, and families. Admission is free, and the atmosphere, filled with music and masks, makes every edition a highly anticipated date for the entire Calatino community.
