Gnocco Estate, the tradition of fried gnocco in Valsamoggia

Gnocco Estate is the summer festival organized by the Gruppo del Gnocco Fritto in Castelletto di Serravalle, one of the historic hamlets of the Municipality of Valsamoggia, in the province of Bologna, in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. It is the summer version of a village festival rooted in the territory, a twin of the larger Sagra del Gnocco Fritto that the same group offers in autumn. The event takes place in the covered equipped area at Via Enrico Berlinguer 105, a structure that allows the public to be sheltered even in case of bad weather.

Fried gnocco, a symbol of Emilian cuisine

The absolute protagonist is gnocco fritto, the puff pastry dough, leavened and fried, which in Emilia accompanies cured meats and cheeses and which in Castelletto is prepared following the traditional recipe. Alongside gnocco, the food stalls offer other typical specialties from the Bolognese and Modenese Apennines, such as tigelle, borlenghi, polenta, and French fries. The stalls open every evening at 6:00 PM, allowing visitors to dine at leisure before the evening shows.

Music and dance evenings

The festival complements good food with a rich musical program, with particular attention to the tradition of Emilian and Romagnol dance orchestras, a true cultural heritage of the region. Each evening offers a different event, from liscio to tribute bands, in an atmosphere of popular celebration open to families and visitors of all ages. The shows generally start around 8:30 PM.

A charitable festival

Gnocco Estate is not just a moment of conviviality: as tradition dictates, the proceeds from the event are donated to charity, confirming the strong link between the Gruppo del Gnocco Fritto and the local community. The festival is under the patronage of the Municipality of Valsamoggia and is included among the flagship gastronomic events of the summer in the Valle del Samoggia area.

Castelletto di Serravalle and Emilia-Romagna

Castelletto di Serravalle is a small hilly village surrounded by the greenery of Valsamoggia, a short distance from Bologna. Visiting Gnocco Estate is also an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of Emilia-Romagna, amidst hills, castles, and ancient gastronomic traditions, in an area famous for the quality of its typical products and the warm welcome of its inhabitants.
