Performances, music, and theatre along the paths of the Bolognese Apennines
Crinali is a widespread, travelling festival that, from May to October, brings music, theatre, dance, circus, and cinema along the paths and through the villages of the Bolognese Apennines. The formula is simple and original: participants meet at the starting point, walk a section of the trail accompanied by environmental guides, and at the end of the walk, the landscape transforms into a stage for a live performance. It is an invitation to rediscover the mountains slowly, where the protagonists are the places, the views, the ridges, and the artists who inhabit them for a day.
In the Municipality of Grizzana Morandi (Metropolitan City of Bologna, Emilia-Romagna), the festival finds some of its most beloved stops. The village is located on the ridge between the Reno and Setta valleys and holds extraordinary places: the Giorgio Morandi House-Museum and the Fienili del Campiaro, where the great painter spent his summers and depicted these hills; the Rocchetta Mattei, a fairytale castle with esoteric architecture commissioned by Count Cesare Mattei; the sanctuary of Montovolo, a panoramic balcony over the Apennines; and the villages of Piandisetta, Savignano, and Tavernola.
The stops in Grizzana Morandi alternate walks suitable for families with more challenging hikes, followed by musical and theatrical moments. The programme ranges from singer-songwriter music to folk, from classical to jazz, up to puppet theatre and sensory experiences. Among the festival's themes are environmental sustainability and accessibility, with walks also designed for visually impaired people.
Crinali is promoted by the Municipality of Bologna and the Metropolitan City of Bologna, in collaboration with the Apennine municipalities and the Fondazione Bologna Welcome, and is part of the Bologna Estate programme. Over the years, it has become one of the flagship events of the Apennine summer, capable of combining landscape enhancement, slow tourism, and quality live performance.
The 2026 edition of Crinali runs from May 27 to October 17, with more than 60 performances spread across 14 municipalities in the Bolognese Apennines. The programme intertwines singer-songwriter, classical, jazz, and world music with theatre, dance, and circus, in constant dialogue between art and landscape. The numerous stops in Grizzana Morandi guide the audience through the area's iconic locations, from Montovolo to Rocchetta Mattei, including the villages of Piandisetta and Tavernola.
The full festival programme also includes artists such as Valeria Sturba, Flexus, the Orchestra Senzaspine, Achille Succi, and, on July 26 at the Kainua archaeological park in Marzabotto, a performance with Elio Germano and Teho Teardo freely inspired by Pier Paolo Pasolini's "Il sogno di una cosa" (The Dream of a Thing).
