The gnocchi festival in the peperino stone village of Vitorchiano
Gnocchi in Piazza is the festival that transforms Piazza Roma, at the entrance to the historic center of Vitorchiano, into a large open-air dining room every August. The formula is the simple, time-tested one typical of Tuscia village festivals: gnocchi prepared by volunteers, tables set in the square, music to accompany the evening, and the illuminated medieval village providing the backdrop. The event is organized by the San Michele Arcangelo Festival Committee and is part of the summer program promoted by the Municipality of Vitorchiano, in the province of Viterbo, in the Lazio region.
The star dish is no coincidence: gnocchi are a specialty deeply rooted in Viterbo's cuisine, characterized by simple, genuine ingredients and family recipes passed down through generations. The festival aims to celebrate these historic local flavors, bringing them back to the heart of village life in an atmosphere of conviviality: dining together, chatting, and listening to good music. It is the kind of evening where gastronomy becomes an opportunity for locals and visitors from across the Tuscia region to meet.
Cooking and serving the food is the San Michele Arcangelo Festival Committee, the group of volunteers in Vitorchiano who manage the patron saint celebrations in May, the San Michele delle Vendemmie festival in late September, and the preparation of the local ciambella, a traditional double-baked pastry. Gnocchi in Piazza is their summer culinary highlight: a unique, highly anticipated, and well-attended evening that keeps the tradition of village festivals alive.
The festival is part of a summer particularly rich in events: Vitorchiano's calendar complements the gnocchi with the Notte Rosa, the Threshing and Plowing Festival, the Vitorchiano Film Festival, the Cavatello Festival organized by the Pro Loco in late July, and musical events throughout August, leading up to the September celebrations. Those arriving for the gnocchi will find a lively village, with exhibitions, shows, and bustling squares throughout the season.
Vitorchiano is well worth a visit in its own right: listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, the town stands on a cliff of peperino, the grey volcanic stone used to build houses, towers, and walls that seem to merge with the rocky spur. Strolling through the alleys, you will encounter medieval vistas, views over the green ravines of the Tuscia, and, just outside the center, the famous moai carved from peperino, the only one of its kind in Italy. Combining the festival with an evening walk through the village is the best way to experience this corner of the province of Viterbo.
Gnocchi in Piazza 2026 will take place on Saturday, August 8, 2026, in Vitorchiano, in the province of Viterbo. The event, confirmed by the summer calendar promoted by the Municipality together with local associations, is dedicated as always to ancient flavors and conviviality: the focus of the evening will be gnocchi, a specialty of Viterbo cuisine, cooked by the volunteers of the San Michele Arcangelo Festival Committee and served in Piazza Roma, with musical accompaniment. The festival ideally concludes the sequence of gastronomic events in early August of the Vitorchiano summer, following the Cavatello Festival in late July.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been released. The festival's time-tested formula includes a gastronomic evening in Piazza Roma with gnocchi prepared by the committee and music to enliven the square; in past editions, the stands opened at 7:00 PM. The times and any musical guests for 2026 will be announced by the organizers on the Municipality and committee channels.
Vitorchiano can be reached by car via the SS675 Orte-Viterbo highway, taking the Vitorchiano exit; the town is approximately 8 km from Viterbo and 90 km from Rome. Piazza Roma is located at the entrance to the historic center; on festival days, it is advisable to park in the designated areas along the provincial road and continue on foot. Alternatively, there are Cotral bus connections from Viterbo.
Free access to the evening in the square: you only pay for what you consume at the food stalls.
Arrive early in the evening to secure a table and take advantage of your visit to explore the peperino village, its viewpoints over the ravines, and the famous moai.
