The most spectacular Holy Week ritual in the Nebrodi Mountains
The Giudei Festival is the most iconic event of San Fratello, a small town perched in the Nebrodi Mountains, in the province of Messina. Every year, during Holy Week, the village transforms into an open-air stage where dozens of masked figures, the famous Giudei, take over the streets for three full days, from Holy Wednesday to Good Friday. Visitors immediately understand why scholar Benedetto Rubino wrote that anyone who has not witnessed the Giudei festival in San Fratello has missed one of the most singular expressions of Sicilian folk tradition.
The protagonists wear red and yellow jackets and trousers, richly embroidered with beads, and hide their faces under a red hood with long arched eyebrows, from which a leather tongue protrudes. The costume is completed by a helmet with a plume or horsehair tail and, above all, a military trumpet and chains that they clank incessantly. Men of all ages, often local youths, gather in groups to roam the alleys, playing and shouting in a deliberately irreverent climate that contrasts with the solemnity of religious processions. These costumes are not bought; they are passed down from father to son, and each family guards its own.
The power of the festival lies in this coexistence of opposites. While the community experiences the mourning of Christ's Passion, the Giudei represent noise, transgression, and the overturning of rules. Their origin dates back to the Middle Ages and is the subject of ethno-anthropological studies: the Giudeo embodies a character and culture deeply rooted in the small San Fratello community, expressing a socio-cultural identity that is difficult to define yet incredibly strong.
Holy Wednesday opens with the procession of the Pietà , while the first Giudei begin to roam the village. Holy Thursday is dedicated to the Mass of the Lord's Supper and the traditional visit to the 'sepolcri' (altars of repose) set up in the village churches. The climax arrives on Good Friday, with the Stations of the Cross in the morning and, in the afternoon, the solemn procession of the Dead Christ, Our Lady of Sorrows, and the 'varette' (floats) of the Mysteries, accompanied by the funeral marches of the San Benedetto il Moro Band. This is when the Giudei's intrusion reaches its peak, leading up to the final act of forgiveness.
During the festival, the Pro Loco San Fratello APS organizes guided tours of the historic center and cultural routes, featuring interactive QR codes that tell the story, traditions, and most significant sites of the village. It is an opportunity to discover not only the ritual but also the charm of one of the most authentic centers in the Nebrodi region.
