The grand patronal festival of Galati Mamertino, blending faith, processions, and tradition
The Festival of the Three Saints is the most significant religious and cultural event in Galati Mamertino, a town in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, Sicily. Held annually in late August, the celebration unites three figures deeply venerated by the community: the Santissimo Crocifisso, San Rocco, and San Giacomo. It is a deeply rooted tradition, spanning over 150 years, that weaves together faith, folklore, and the town's identity.
At the heart of the festival are the three ancient statues carried in procession: the wooden Crucifix, San Giacomo, and San Rocco—works of the Sicilian school that the community guards with great care. Kept in the churches of the historic center, the statues are accompanied through the village streets by the devotion of the faithful and the music of brass bands.
The festivities unfold over several days marked by rituals and processions. The event opens with the evening transfer of the San Rocco statue from the Church of the Rosary to the Mother Church. The following days feature the procession of San Rocco through the main streets, the solemn crowning of the Crucifix, and the evocative procession that brings the three saints together.
Among the most characteristic moments is the crowning of the Santissimo Crocifisso with braided wheat ears, an ancient sign of thanksgiving for the harvest and the deep bond between the community of Galati Mamertino and its land. This is accompanied by the ritual of the mayor lighting the votive lamp, symbolically entrusting the town to the protection of the three saints. The festival concludes with a procession that returns the statues to their respective churches after visiting the town's symbolic landmarks.
Beyond the religious rites, the Festival of the Three Saints is a vibrant popular celebration: the streets fill with people, brass bands accompany the processions with symphonic marches, and the evenings are enlivened by concerts in Piazza San Giacomo and firework displays that light up the Nebrodi sky. It is an occasion for the community to reunite, strengthen its bonds, and keep alive a tradition that is central to the identity of Galati Mamertino and Sicily.
The Festival of the Three Saints 2026 will take place in Galati Mamertino (Messina) from August 23 to 26, 2026. The festival will follow the traditional schedule: the evening transfer of San Rocco from the Church of the Rosary to the Mother Church, the procession of San Rocco, the crowning of the Crucifix with wheat ears, and the grand procession reuniting the three statues through the historic center.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including times for masses, processions, and evening events, has not yet been released by the organizers. Information will be updated as soon as the official calendar is announced by the Municipality and the parishes of Galati Mamertino.
