About Giro dei Tre Monti

The Giro dei Tre Monti is Imola's classic running event, in Emilia-Romagna: a weekend of running that combines the charm of the Enzo and Dino Ferrari International Racetrack with the hills of the Tre Monti. Founded in 1968, the event attracts thousands of participants every year, including competitive FIDAL athletes, walkers, and children, in a great celebration of sport, solidarity, and territory. The 2026 edition, the 57th, is scheduled for October 3rd and 4th with youth races, a 15.3 km competitive race, and a fun run.

A running tradition spanning over half a century

The Giro dei Tre Monti is one of the most beloved sporting events in Imola, in the Metropolitan City of Bologna, in Emilia-Romagna. Founded in the late sixties, after more than fifty years of history, the event has genuinely preserved its essence: a popular race that is both an athletic challenge and a village festival, capable of attracting thousands of people every year, including competitive runners, walking enthusiasts, and families with children.

The Racetrack and the hills: a unique setting

What makes the Giro dei Tre Monti special is its route, which intertwines two souls of the Imola territory. It starts and finishes inside the Enzo and Dino Ferrari International Racetrack, the legendary Formula 1 circuit, and then tackles the panoramic hilly route that gives the event its name: the loop around the Tre Monti, the hills overlooking the city. Running on the asphalt that has hosted motorsport champions and then climbing through the vineyards and badlands of the hills is an experience that combines sport, landscape, and local identity.

The three days of racing

The event traditionally unfolds over multiple races spread across the weekend, to involve every type of participant:

  • Youth races: dedicated to categories from the youngest to juniors, with distances increasing from 300 meters to 5000 meters, held within the racetrack.
  • FIDAL competitive race: the main race of 15.3 km, included in the FIDAL calendar, partly on the circuit and partly on the hilly route of the Tre Monti.
  • Fun run: open to everyone, on shorter distances (typically 5 km on the racetrack loop or the full 15.3 km route), designed for those who want to experience the event without the pressure of the clock.

Sport, solidarity, and community

The Giro dei Tre Monti is organized by A.S.D. Atletica Imola Sacmi Avis with the patronage of the Municipality of Imola. Every year, the event renews its collaboration with the students of the Physiotherapy degree course at the University of Bologna, Imola/Montecatone campus, who provide post-race recovery massages for athletes. A day that, in the words of the organizers and the municipal administration, is above all a celebration of sport, inclusion, and solidarity, capable of uniting the circuit with the Imola hills.
