Hill race through the paths of the Vena del Gesso, in the heart of the Festival of Forgotten Fruits
The Trail of Forgotten Fruits is the sporting event that, every October, enlivens the hills of Casola Valsenio, a small village in the upper Senio Valley in the province of Ravenna, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna. The race takes its name from the town's most famous event, the Festival of Forgotten Fruits, with which it shares the timing and spirit: rediscovering an authentic rural territory, made up of ancient peasant traditions, forgotten fruits, and hilly landscapes.
Casola Valsenio is one of the southern access points to the Romagnola Gypsum Vein Regional Park, a unique environment in Italy characterized by spectacular gypsum outcrops, sinkholes, karst phenomena, and particular flora and fauna. Running or walking on these paths means crossing badlands, woods, rows of vineyards, and ancient rural tracks, with views stretching across the hills of the Romagna Apennines. The village is known as "the land of herbs and forgotten fruits" and hosts the renowned Garden of Medicinal Herbs, which preserves over 480 species of aromatic and medicinal plants.
The Trail of Forgotten Fruits is part of the rich Romagna running calendar and accompanies the Festival of Forgotten Fruits, which every year attracts thousands of visitors to the historic center of Casola Valsenio for the zero-kilometer market, wine and ancient fruit tastings — azzeruole, giuggiole, cotogni, pere volpine, mele della rosa, nespole, sorbe, and corbezzoli — chestnut-based food stands, and folk shows. For race participants, it is the perfect opportunity to combine sport with the gastronomic and cultural experience of the village.
The event is open to both well-trained athletes, attracted by the challenging gradients of the hilly routes, and to simple walking and hiking enthusiasts who want to discover the territory at a slow pace. The autumn setting, with the colors of the foliage and the fresh air of the Senio hills, makes the Trail of Forgotten Fruits an eagerly awaited event for runners and walkers from all over Romagna.
The Trail of Forgotten Fruits 2026 takes place on Saturday, October 10, 2026, in Casola Valsenio (province of Ravenna), starting from the historic center of the village. The race runs on the hilly paths of the upper Senio Valley, on the edge of the Romagnola Gypsum Vein Park, in conjunction with the Festival of Forgotten Fruits.
The detailed program — competitive routes, possible non-competitive walk, distances, elevation gains, start times, and registration fees — will be announced by the Pro Loco of Casola Valsenio and published on the official event page on ENDU in the weeks leading up to the race. Registrations are managed through the ENDU platform.

Casola Valsenio is reached by going up the Senio Valley. By car, from Faenza or Imola, follow the SP306 Casolana-Riolese; the village is about 30 km from Faenza and the A14 motorway exit. The nearest train station is Faenza, from which you can continue by car or local transport services.
Race registrations are managed through the ENDU platform. For information, you can contact the Pro Loco of Casola Valsenio at +39 0546 73033 or at [email protected].
Appropriate clothing and footwear for running on hills and dirt tracks are recommended. The event coincides with the Festival of Forgotten Fruits: it is advisable to allow time to visit the market and taste the typical autumn products of the village.
