About Monzuno Truffle Festival

Every autumn, the center of Monzuno, in the Bologna Apennines, comes alive for the Truffle Festival and Chestnut Feast: two Sundays in October dedicated to truffles, chestnuts, and forest products. In Piazza Salvo D'Acquisto, gastronomic stands with polenta, crescentine, and roasted chestnuts are followed by local producer markets, guided excursions, folk music, and entertainment for children. A half-century tradition organized by the Pro Loco of Monzuno.

Truffles and Chestnuts: Stars of the Apennine Autumn

The Monzuno Truffle Festival and Chestnut Feast is one of the most beloved autumn festivals in the Bologna Apennines. It takes place in the Municipality of Monzuno, in the Province of Bologna (Emilia-Romagna), and celebrates two local excellences: the prized truffle and the chestnuts harvested in the mountain chestnut groves. The event combines two historical celebrations: the Truffle Festival and the older Chestnut Feast, which, with over fifty editions, is one of the longest-running festivals in the area.

Two Sundays of Celebration in Piazza Salvo D'Acquisto

The heart of the festival is the central Piazza Salvo D'Acquisto, which transforms into a grand market of flavors for two Sundays in October. From morning to evening, forest products are offered at the stands in the square and in the local businesses participating in the initiative, set against the typical autumn colors of the Bologna mountains.

What to Eat

Gastronomy is the true driving force of the Truffle Festival. Among the dishes that return to the festival tables each year:

  • Polenta served with various toppings: sausage and mushrooms, wild boar, ragù, and squacquerone;
  • Crescentine, a specialty of the Bologna Apennines, served in the afternoon;
  • Chestnuts and roasted chestnuts sold directly by local chestnut growers;
  • Special truffle-based menus, available by reservation.

More Than Just Food: Excursions, Music, and Tradition

Alongside the gastronomic stands, the program includes markets of typical and artisanal products, guided excursions and treks through the Apennine woods and trails, folk music and dancing, performances by local bands, and entertainment for children with workshops and readings. It's an opportunity to discover Monzuno and its territory, along the ancient route connecting Bologna to Tuscany, in a day that combines good food, nature, and tradition.

The event is organized by the Pro Loco Monzuno Association, with the support of the Municipality of Monzuno, and is part of the widespread Truffle Festival circuit of the Bologna Apennines promoted by the Metropolitan City of Bologna.
