The mountain stage of the Giro d'Italia with start from Aosta and finish in Pila
The Giro d'Italia, the historic stage race of professional cycling organized by RCS Sport, once again stops in Valle d'Aosta with a high mountain fraction starting from Aosta and finishing uphill in Pila, the resort above the municipality of Gressan. The start is set in Piazza Émile Chanoux, a stone's throw from the Arch of Augustus and the Roman monuments of the regional capital.
The stage is described as an almost uninterrupted sequence of climbs and descents, with no real recovery phases. The route winds through the Valpelline and the mountains around Aosta, with several King of the Mountains (Gran Premi della Montagna) — including Saint-Barthélemy, Doues, Lin Noir, and Verrogne — before the final ascent to Pila from the Gressan side, with challenging gradients. The finish in Pila, at about 1,800 meters altitude near the new cable car station, represents one of the most evocative finish lines of the race.
The passage of the Giro d'Italia is an event that involves the entire Aosta Valley community: the route crosses numerous municipalities in the region and attracts thousands of fans along the roads and on the climbs. Side initiatives, such as the event Aosta Cuore in Rosa, spring up around the race, enlivening the city during the event days. For Aosta and for Valle d'Aosta, it is an opportunity for national and international visibility, as well as a great popular celebration of sport.
Stage 14 of the 109th Giro d'Italia, the Aosta-Pila stage, is scheduled for Saturday, May 23, 2026. The start is set at Piazza Chanoux in Aosta, near the Arch of Augustus, with the official start expected around 12:55 PM; the finish is anticipated in Pila (Gressan) in the afternoon.
The route measures 133 km with approximately 4,350 meters of elevation gain, featuring five King of the Mountains classifications: Saint-Barthélemy, Doues, Lin Noir, Verrogne, and the final climb to Pila. The course passes through numerous Aosta Valley municipalities — including Saint-Christophe, Quart, Nus, Roisan, Doues, Sarre, Saint-Nicolas, Villeneuve, Aymavilles, and Jovençan — with an intermediate sprint in Roisan. The finish in Pila, at about 1,800 meters near the new "la Stella" cable car station, is the third in the Giro's history after the 1987 and 1992 editions. The stage is preceded by the Giro-E, starting from Aymavilles.
Aosta, Saint-Christophe, Quart, Nus, Roisan, Doues, Sarre, Saint-Nicolas, Villeneuve, Aymavilles, Jovençan, Gressan, and other Aosta Valley municipalities.
Aosta is reachable by car via the A5 Turin-Aosta motorway (Aosta exit) and by train to Aosta station. Traffic changes are expected on the days of the race: it is advisable to get information in advance about road closures and parking.

Arrive well in advance to secure a good viewing spot, especially on the climbs. Bring water, sunscreen, and clothing suitable for mountain conditions.
