Three days of flavor, music, and tradition centered around the sweet Iblean onion
In the heart of the Iblean plateau, at an altitude of about 520 meters, the small town of Giarratana (in the province of Ragusa, south-eastern Sicily) has been celebrating its most famous culinary treasure for decades: the Giarratana Onion. This large, flat, light-colored bulb is renowned for its remarkably sweet and fleshy taste, and is protected as a Slow Food Presidium. Between August 11th and 14th, one of the most popular festivals in the Iblean territory is built around this unique product.
During the event, the streets and squares of Giarratana's historic center are filled with stalls offering local products and handicrafts. The onion is the undisputed star: it is served both cooked and raw in numerous traditional Iblean recipes, accompanied by local cheeses and regional wine. Alongside the onion, the town's other "white" specialty is almond and honey nougat, prepared according to time-honored recipes and methods.
The festival is not just about gastronomy: the program alternates tastings with parades by the Tamburi Cittร di Giarratana group, street performers, exhibitions, and the popular vintage motorcycle display along the main street. The evenings are brought to life by the "Night of Music," featuring musical and folk performances in the town squares until late.
The event traditionally coincides with the celebrations for Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, the patron saint of Giarratana, and serves as a defining identity event for the entire Iblean community, attracting visitors from across the province of Ragusa and the rest of Sicily. Organized by the "Cipolla di Giarratana" Association with the support of the Municipality, the event offers free admission.
The 46th Giarratana Onion Festival will be held from August 12th to 14th, 2026, confirming the traditional mid-August appointment in the town's historic center (province of Ragusa). As every year, the star will be the sweet white onion, a Slow Food Presidium, offered in numerous Iblean culinary preparations, along with almond and honey nougat, local cheeses, and regional wines.
At the moment, the detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been announced by the organizers. Based on previous editions, food and craft stalls, parades by the Tamburi Cittร di Giarratana group, a vintage motorcycle exhibition, and evenings of music and folklore are expected. The full program will be published by the Municipality of Giarratana and the "Cipolla di Giarratana" Association in the weeks leading up to the event.
