About Fujenti Madonna dell'Arco

Every Easter Monday, the day after Easter, tens of thousands of devotees dressed in white robes, red belts, and blue sashes walk to the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Arco in Sant'Anastasia, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. This is the pilgrimage of the 'fujenti' (the runners), a tradition rooted in the 1450 miracle. Paranze (groups), banners, ex-votos, and dialect chants continue for over twenty-four consecutive hours in one of the most intense and well-attended expressions of popular religious devotion in Campania.

The ritual that opens the Vesuvian spring

Easter Monday, known in Campania as 'Pasquetta', transforms Sant'Anastasia, a town in the Metropolitan City of Naples, into the religious heart of the entire region. From three in the morning until the dawn of the following day, the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Arco welcomes an uninterrupted flow of pilgrims arriving on foot from Naples, the Vesuvian area, the Nola countryside, and across Campania. It is the great pilgrimage of the fujenti, a collective ritual that has no equal in intensity and scale within the landscape of Italian popular festivals.

The miracle of 1450

The devotion stems from a specific event: on Easter Monday, April 6, 1450, during a game of pallamaglio, a player angry over his defeat hurled his wooden ball at the image of the Madonna frescoed on a shrine near an ancient arch and a linden tree. According to tradition, the left cheek of the Virgin's face began to bleed as if it were alive. News of the event spread immediately, and the following year, the penitential pilgrimage began. It has been repeated every year since, without significant interruption, for over five and a half centuries.

The paranze and the fujenti

The protagonists are the battenti, commonly called fujenti because they run the final meters toward the small temple. They organize themselves into paranze—neighborhood, street, or family associations—each with its own name, banner, and identity. The attire has been codified for centuries and documented by 16th-century votive tablets: white robe, red waist sash, and blue shoulder sash. Many walk for kilometers barefoot, carrying candles, flowers, and ex-votos.

  • Paranze arriving from the Neapolitan and Vesuvian sides, with separately regulated entrances
  • Chants and invocations in ancient local dialects, accompanied by tammorre (frame drums) and folk instruments
  • Votive gifts deposited before the image of the Madonna in the temple
  • Historical routes such as the ancient Strada Nazionale delle Puglie, followed by groups coming from Brusciano and Pomigliano d'Arco

How the day unfolds

The doors of the Sanctuary open at 3:00 AM, and the stream of faithful begins to move along the central nave toward the temple. Eucharistic celebrations take place throughout the day in the multi-purpose hall, while civil and military authorities manage the alternating access of the processions. The pilgrimage continues non-stop and only concludes at dawn on Tuesday, after nearly thirty consecutive hours of influx.

Numbers of a regional festival

The figures reflect the scale of the phenomenon: over 25,000 registered battenti, more than 40,000 pilgrims actually on the move, and an overall estimate exceeding 150,000 visitors throughout the day. The Sanctuary broadcasts the entire event live on its Facebook and YouTube channels, allowing Italian communities abroad to follow the ritual.

Towards UNESCO recognition

The Municipality of Sant'Anastasia, through a City Council resolution, has initiated the candidacy process for the cult and pilgrimage of the Madonna dell'Arco to be recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Simultaneously, the Sanctuary has published a new Historical-Artistic Guide, accompanied by the Small Guide to the Museum of Ex-Votos, which houses one of the richest votive collections in Southern Italy.

More than just Easter Monday

The Sanctuary's devotional calendar does not end with Easter Monday: the fifteen Great Mondays, established in 1957, prepare for the main pilgrimage; March 25 commemorates the appearance of the stars in 1675; April 18 marks the liturgical feast of the Madonna dell'Arco; and the second Sunday of September celebrates the anniversary of the Coronation, dating back to 1874.

Sant'Anastasia and the surrounding area

The Sanctuary stands on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, within the National Park, just a few kilometers from Naples and easily accessible via the Circumvesuviana train. Those arriving for the pilgrimage can combine their visit with the historic center of Sant'Anastasia, the trails of Vesuvius, and the nearby Vesuvian archaeological area, in an itinerary that weaves together popular faith, landscape, and heritage.

Fujenti Madonna dell'Arco — edition 2026

The 575th Easter Monday pilgrimage took place on Monday, April 6, 2026, a date that coincided with the exact anniversary of the 1450 miracle. The Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Arco opened its doors at 3:00 AM and closed them only at 6:15 AM the following Tuesday, after twenty-nine uninterrupted hours of influx: 25,501 registered battenti, over 40,000 actual pilgrims, and approximately 150,000 total attendees in Sant'Anastasia.

The 575th pilgrimage

The 2026 edition of Easter Monday took on a particular symbolic value: April 6 is the same date as the miracle of 1450, which occurred exactly 576 years earlier. The paranze arrived in Sant'Anastasia from the Neapolitan and Vesuvian sides, with entrances regulated by civil and military authorities and an impressive security apparatus involving the Police Headquarters, Carabinieri, Municipal Police, Civil Protection, Italian Red Cross, and hundreds of volunteers.

The figures

The pilgrimage lasted 29 hours, from 3:00 AM on Monday, April 6, to 6:15 AM on Tuesday, April 7. There were 25,501 registered battenti, with over 40,000 pilgrims actually on the move and an overall estimate of approximately 150,000 attendees. The Sanctuary broadcast the entire day live on Facebook and YouTube, followed also by Italian communities in Canada, Australia, and South America.

Towards UNESCO

The edition was accompanied by the presentation of the new Historical-Artistic Guide of the Sanctuary, edited by fathers Gianpaolo Pagano and Domenico Granata, and by the progress of the pilgrimage's candidacy as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, supported by the mayor of Sant'Anastasia, Carmine Esposito.
