The spring concert of the Ora/Auer wind band, one of the oldest in South Tyrol
The Frühjahrskonzert is the annual spring concert of the Musikkapelle Auer, the wind band of Ora/Auer, a municipality in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Every year, as spring begins, the musicians in traditional costume present a program carefully prepared throughout the winter months: it is the moment when the band showcases the work of an entire season of rehearsals and renews its bond with the community.
Founded in 1801, the Musikkapelle Auer is one of the oldest wind ensembles in South Tyrol. A decisive period for its growth began in 1922 under the musical leadership of Sepp Thaler, a composer and conductor who left a profound mark on the band and the entire South Tyrolean band tradition. Today, the Musikkapelle Auer remains a cornerstone of the town's cultural and social life, accompanying religious processions, patronal festivals, and civic events throughout the year.
The spring concert is held in the Great Hall of the Landwirtschaftliche Oberschule (the Agricultural School of Ora), a spacious and welcoming venue that serves as the town's concert hall for the evening. Under the baton of maestro Georg Pichler Giulay, the band offers a varied repertoire, alternating marches and traditional Central European band music with symphonic pieces and soundtracks arranged for wind orchestra. Admission is traditionally free, and the evening is designed as a celebration open to the entire community.
In South Tyrol, a Musikkapelle is not just a band; it is a true pillar of local identity: it preserves tradition, trains young musicians, and marks the moments of community life with its music. The Frühjahrskonzert in Ora perfectly embodies this spirit and offers visitors the chance to discover an authentic aspect of South Tyrolean culture up close.
The 2026 spring concert took place on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 8:00 PM in the Great Hall of the Landwirtschaftliche Oberschule in Ora/Auer. The evening officially opened the celebrations for the 225th anniversary of the band's founding in 1801. Conductor Georg Pichler Giulay prepared a program described as particularly refined and worthy of the jubilee occasion.
The Frühjahrskonzert was just the first of the major events of 2026. The heart of the celebrations was the Jubilee Festival (Jubiläumsfest), three days in the center of Ora from May 15 to 17, 2026, featuring guest bands, a parade, and a solemn mass. On June 9, 2026, the Sepp-Thaler-Konzert was also held, dedicated to the composer and historic conductor of the band on the 125th anniversary of his birth.
