About Froscia Festival

In Alessandria della Rocca, a charming village in the Sicani Mountains near Agrigento, the Froscia and 'Ncannellata Festival celebrates two icons of local peasant cuisine: the froscia, a traditional Easter omelet enriched with peas, fava beans, wild asparagus, ricotta, and calamint, and the 'ncannellata, an almond pastry with a signature white glaze. Along Via Roma and the historic center, visitors can enjoy food stalls, Sicilian cart parades, flag-wavers, brass bands, and concerts during this three-day celebration of flavor and tradition.

The Froscia and 'Ncannellata Festival

The Froscia and 'Ncannellata Festival is a culinary and cultural event held in Alessandria della Rocca, a town in the Sicani Mountains in the province of Agrigento, Sicily. Established in 2025 by the local municipal administration and the Pro Loco, the festival highlights two traditional local dishes rooted in peasant cuisine and Easter festivities, turning them into the centerpiece of a grand village celebration filled with music, folklore, and conviviality.

The froscia and the 'ncannellata

The froscia is an ancient peasant dish, a stuffed omelet prepared with fresh eggs, peas, fava beans, wild asparagus, sheep's milk ricotta, and Sicani cheese, all seasoned with nepitella (calamint), a wild mint. Each ingredient carries symbolic value tied to the village's Easter traditions. The 'ncannellata is a typical almond-based pastry made with ground almonds, flour, and sugar, recognizable by its soft almond paste and distinctive white glaze: according to local legend, it was created by Sister Maria Cannella, who gave the sweet its name.

A widespread celebration along Via Roma

The heart of the festival is Via Roma and the historic center of Alessandria della Rocca, where food stalls are set up for tasting traditional dishes. Alongside the food, the program offers a rich calendar of entertainment: the A.C.A.M. "V. Bellini" town band, parades of Sicilian carts, flag-wavers and historical pageants, Bersaglieri fanfares, folk groups, and evening concerts in the square. There are also moments for reflection, such as the conference dedicated to cancer prevention and nutrition, reflecting the community's focus on the link between food and health.

The village of the Sicani Mountains

Nestled among the hills of the Agrigento hinterland, Alessandria della Rocca is a small town that preserves deeply rooted rural, religious, and gastronomic traditions. The festival is an opportunity to discover this authentic corner of Sicily, far from the main tourist circuits, and to rediscover flavors and knowledge passed down from generation to generation. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Alessandria della Rocca together with the Municipality of Alessandria della Rocca and has already established itself, since its first edition, as one of the most cherished spring events in the Sicani Mountains area.

Froscia Festival — edition 2026

The second edition of the Froscia and 'Ncannellata Festival took place in Alessandria della Rocca from May 8 to 10, 2026, along Via Roma and the historic center. Three days of food stalls, Sicilian cart parades, flag-wavers, brass bands, folk groups, and evening concerts, with froscia and 'ncannellata as the stars of the table.
