A festival rediscovering the frog, a staple of Cellole's rural heritage
The Frog Festival is held in Cellole, a town on the Caserta coast bordering the Lazio region, to bring back to the table an ingredient that has shaped the area's gastronomic history. The frog, with its delicate flavor often described as a cross between chicken and white fish, was a staple for the rural families of the Basso Volturno: a meat substitute during times of economic hardship, now rediscovered as a local delicacy. The event, organized by the Il Mio Grifone association with the patronage of the Municipality of Cellole, takes place in Piazza Aldo Moro for its first edition from July 24 to 26, 2026.
The heart of the festival is its culinary journey: the stalls serve frogs prepared according to various Cellole recipes, ranging from traditional preparations to modern twists designed to highlight the meat's delicate texture. Alongside the signature dish, the festival offers fried mini-pizzas, gnocchi with tomato sauce, graffe (fried doughnuts), peanuts, and marshmallows, all paired every evening with ice-cold draft beer. It is a popular and convivial menu that blends curiosity for an unusual ingredient with the joy of a village fair.
Each day is brought to life by performances and live music in Piazza Aldo Moro. Friday kicks off with karaoke, interviews, and group dances; on Saturday, a tribute band dedicated to 883 and Max Pezzali takes the stage; Sunday concludes with a live performance and a DJ set. It is a simple and festive program designed for families, curious visitors, and fans of popular traditions.
With this first edition, Cellole joins the rich calendar of summer festivals in Campania and the province of Caserta, which tell the story of a territory through its most authentic flavors. The Frog Festival is a unique offering, perfect for those seeking unconventional events and tastes tied to a specific rural memory, and it represents a way for the Cellole community to rediscover its culinary roots.
The first 2026 edition of the Frog Festival enlivens Piazza Aldo Moro in Cellole for three evenings, from Friday, July 24 to Sunday, July 26. The stalls offer frogs in various Cellole recipes, along with fried mini-pizzas, gnocchi with tomato sauce, graffe, peanuts, and marshmallows, with ice-cold draft beer available every evening. The musical program accompanies each day with live performances in the square.
