Coreno Summer: the beating heart of the village

Coreno Summer is the festival that brings together the summer events of Coreno Ausonio, a small town of about 1,600 inhabitants perched on the Aurunci Mountains, in the southern part of the Frosinone province, in the Lazio region. Promoted by the Pro Loco 'Antonio Lisi' APS in collaboration with the municipal administration, the event transforms the village's stone squares and alleys into a widespread stage for celebrations, music, and folk traditions throughout the month of August.

The Palio of the districts and the donkey race

The most anticipated event is the Palio of the districts, which traditionally takes place on the first Sunday of August. The village districts compete in the characteristic donkey race, a playful and engaging competition rooted in local farming culture. Processions, flag-wavers, traditional games, and the passionate participation of the neighborhoods make the Palio a moment of strong community identity, capable of drawing back emigrants and visitors from neighboring villages.

Ciao Estate and the August evenings

The program continues with Ciao Estate, a series of evenings traditionally held around August 10th-13th: live concerts, shows, music, and dancing in the square celebrate the heart of summer. There is no shortage of food festivals dedicated to local products, from extra virgin olive oil to traditional Aurunci dishes like laina e fagioli, along with food stands, tastings, and dance evenings that animate the historic center until late at night.

A village of stone and marble

Coreno Ausonio is world-famous for its Perlato Royal marble, extracted here from dozens of quarries and traditionally used along the Appian Way, in Pompeii, and at the Abbey of Montecassino. Experiencing Coreno Summer also means discovering a village suspended between the mountains and the sea: from the Serra viewpoint, the gaze embraces the Gulf of Gaeta and the Pontine Islands, while the medieval historic center preserves the churches of Santa Margherita, San Sebastiano, and Sant'Andrea.

A community summer in Ciociaria

More than just a simple program of events, Coreno Summer is the way an entire community comes together: families, young people, and the elderly share the squares, flavors, and traditions that make this corner of Ciociaria unique. Most events are free and held outdoors, designed for audiences of all ages and for those who want to breathe in the authentic atmosphere of a festive Lazio village.
