The Queen Maxi Frittata with over 2000 eggs in the heart of Montaquila
The Frittata Festival of Montaquila (province of Isernia, Volturno Valley, Molise) is one of the longest-standing and most iconic events in Molise: born in 1981, it celebrates an ancient Easter custom where families prepared large frittatas with eggs, local cured meats, oil, and aromatic herbs to share with neighbors. A rural memory that the village has transformed into a beloved village festival.
The most anticipated moment is the preparation of the Maxi Frittata Regina, a giant frittata cooked in Piazza Dante Alighieri with over two thousand eggs and typical local products. Each year, a new record is aimed for: from 1985 eggs in 2024 to 1987 in 2025, aiming for over 2000 eggs. On Sunday, the maxi frittata parades through the village streets, accompanied by locals in traditional costume and local music groups.
In addition to the frittata, the program includes costume parades, Molise and world music folk groups on the main stage, tastings of typical dishes, demonstrations by local producers, workshops for children, trekking and horseback excursions, vintage car and Vespa rallies, photographic competitions, and dance performances. Stands are set up throughout the historic center, animating the village for the entire weekend.
The Frittata Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Volturno Valley and experience a Molise tradition that combines gastronomy, folklore, and community spirit in an event with an established reputation.
The 43rd edition of the Frittata Festival returns to Montaquila on May 23rd and 24th, 2026. The star is the Maxi Frittata Regina, which after 1987 eggs in 2025 aims to surpass 2000 eggs in Piazza Dante Alighieri. On Saturday, the public witnesses the preparation; on Sunday, the giant frittata parades through the village streets accompanied by locals in traditional costume and music groups. Two days of taste, folklore, and community celebration in the Volturno Valley.
Detailed schedules will be released by the organizers in the days preceding the event.
