A Chestnut Feast at the Foot of the Matese
When autumn colours the woods of the Matese, San Massimo (province of Campobasso) lights up its Chestnut Festival. The village, located a few kilometres from the renowned ski resort of Campitello Matese, transforms Piazza Marconi into a large festival space dedicated to the fruits and flavours of the season.
The Flavours of the Mountains
The star of the show is, of course, the chestnut, served as fragrant roasted chestnuts, but the food stalls offer much more: polenta, porcini mushroom and truffle gnocchi, hung caciocavallo cheese grilled on embers, sandwiches, and mulled wine to warm up the evenings. This is the authentic and abundant cuisine of the inland Molise mountains, to be enjoyed with company and live music that enlivens the square until late at night.
A Growing Festival
Born just a few years ago, the San Massimo Chestnut Festival has grown rapidly to become an anticipated event of the Molise autumn, complete with a free shuttle service to facilitate visitor access. Organized by the Pro Loco of San Massimo, it is the perfect opportunity to discover this corner of the Matese, amidst nature, tradition, and good food.
Chestnut Festival — edition 2026
The Chestnut Festival returns in October 2026 in San Massimo (CB), at the foot of Campitello Matese, expected around the 5th edition. The event will again feature food stalls in Piazza Marconi with roasted chestnuts, polenta, porcini mushroom and truffle gnocchi, hung caciocavallo cheese, and mulled wine, accompanied by live music and the free shuttle service for visitors. The precise dates and detailed program are usually announced by the Pro Loco of San Massimo in the weeks preceding the event.

- Opening of the food stalls in Piazza Marconi (from late afternoon)
- Roasted chestnuts, polenta, porcini mushroom and truffle gnocchi, hung caciocavallo cheese, sandwiches, and mulled wine
- Live music until late at night
- Free shuttle to reach the event
