About Fried Zucchini Flower Festival

Every June, the hills of Scandicci in the village of San Michele a Torri host the Fried Zucchini Flower Festival, one of the most beloved gastronomic events in the Florence area. For two weekends, the local UISP club opens its stalls to serve crispy fried zucchini flowersโ€”either plain or stuffed with cheese and anchoviesโ€”paired with Tuscan cold cuts, crostini, pecorino cheese, and local hillside wines. It is a convivial, open-air gathering with panoramic views that attracts thousands of food lovers every year.

A local celebration on the hills of Scandicci

The Fried Zucchini Flower Festival takes place in San Michele a Torri, a hillside village in the municipality of Scandicci, in the province of Florence, Tuscany. Organized by the Circolo SOMS-UISP of San Michele a Torri, it is one of the most recognizable summer festivals in the Florentine area. Established in the late 1990s, it reached its 26th edition in 2026, a testament to a tradition deeply rooted in the community.

The zucchini flower, the absolute star

The festival's signature dish is the fried zucchini flower, one of the most prized ingredients of the Tuscan summer, prepared here according to a beloved traditional recipe. It is served in two versions: the simple, golden-crisp classic, and the version stuffed with cheese and anchovies. Most of the flowers are sourced from local farms on the hills of San Michele a Torri, ensuring freshness and an authentic connection to the land.

The menu and products of the Florentine hills

Alongside the zucchini flowers, the stalls offer other traditional Tuscan specialties:

  • Tuscan cold cuts and crostini
  • Pecorino di Tuscania
  • Hillside wines: the white Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone and the Chianti Colli Fiorentini from the Fattoria di San Michele a Torri

The kitchen is run by club volunteers, and everything takes place outdoors on a panoramic lawn with beautiful views of the Scandicci hills.

A convivial and popular gathering

The festival is much more than just a culinary event: it is a meeting point for the local village and the entire Scandicci area, drawing thousands of visitors over its two-weekend run. The atmosphere is that of a typical Tuscan village feast, filled with long tables, lively conversation, and genuine food, all set in a natural landscape just a few kilometers from Florence.
