The Teramo-style fried cheese in the hamlet of Villa Popolo
The Fried Cheese Festival takes place every June in the village of Villa Popolo, a small mountain hamlet in the municipality of Torricella Sicura, in the province of Teramo, nestled in the heart of the Abruzzo Apennines. It is one of the most beloved festivals in the Teramo area, drawing crowds of visitors to this tiny village, all eager to taste a simple yet irresistible dish rooted in peasant tradition.
The undisputed star is the fried cheese, a typical and delicious dish of Teramo cuisine linked to the pastoral culture that has defined these mountains for centuries. The sheep or cow milk cheese is dipped in batter and fried until crispy on the outside and melted on the inside. The Pro Loco also offers a truffle-infused version made with cow's milk, adding one of the region's most precious aromas to the menu.
Alongside the cheese, the food stalls serve the great classics of Abruzzo mountain gastronomy: arrosticini (skewered lamb), sausages, pancetta, and fries, all sourced from local, farm-to-table producers.
The event began in 1999, when local producers and shopkeepers approached the Pro Loco to create an event that would highlight the dairy tradition tied to shepherding, which has historically been widespread in these mountain areas. Since then, the festival has grown year after year, becoming a staple of the Teramo summer.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of Abruzzo. During the evenings, visitors can explore the rural church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo, considered one of the most beautiful country churches in the area. Each night, the festival is brought to life by live music and dance, turning the small village into a convivial meeting point under the Apennine stars.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco Association of Torricella Sicura APS, with the patronage of the Municipal Administration of Torricella Sicura and the Consortium of Municipalities of the Vomano-Tordino Mountain Basin of Teramo. The event takes place rain or shine, thanks to the installation of regulation gazebos.
