Four days of flavor by the Po River featuring the spectacular overturned polenta
On the banks of the Po River, in the heart of the Alessandria Monferrato, the town of Frassineto Po (Province of Alessandria, Piedmont) hosts one of the most deeply rooted food and wine festivals in the region every late August: the Pepper Festival. Organized by the Frassineto Po Pro Loco since 1973, the event has grown over time to become a highly anticipated appointment throughout the Casale and Monferrato area, attracting thousands of visitors over four evenings.
The common thread of the festival is the pepper, a local garden excellence, prepared in numerous recipes served at the food stand set up in the Via Marconi event area. Among the most popular dishes are peppers in bagna cauda, agnolotti with roast sauce, gnocchi with peppers and gorgonzola, wild boar with polenta, and the essential Piedmontese mixed fry, all accompanied by Monferrato wines. Vegetarian options and seasonal specialties are also available.
The true symbol of the festival is the giant overturned polenta: on Sunday afternoon, around 5:30 PM, approximately 600 kg of polenta cooked in a large copper cauldron are overturned onto a long steel table in the square and served, on-site or for takeaway, with peperonata and sausage. It is a collective spectacle that draws a crowd of curious onlookers and represents the identity heart of the festival.
Each evening features live music with dance orchestras, tribute bands, and DJ sets, in a tradition that has previously seen great names of Italian music on stage, such as I Nomadi, who returned to Frassineto for the fiftieth anniversary. Sunday adds the San Satiro Agri-Food market, featuring exhibitors, hobbyists, and local producers. There is also space for bocce and tennis tournaments, as well as walks, trekking routes, and bike rides along the Po River Park that surrounds the town.
The result of the volunteer work of the Pro Loco and supported by the Municipality of Frassineto Po and the Piedmont Region, the Pepper Festival is much more than a gastronomic event: it is a community celebration that brings generations together around the flavors, music, and traditions of Monferrato.
