Float parades, traditional masks, and masquerade balls in the heart of this town between Enna and Syracuse

In the period leading up to Lent, Francofonte transforms into a vast open-air stage. The Francofonte Carnival, located in the province of Syracuse and nestled between the Iblei Mountains and the Calatino plain, is one of the most cherished local traditions, attracting families, children, and visitors from neighboring towns. The event is organized by the Francofonte Pro Loco with the patronage of the Municipality, and takes place over several days between Fat Thursday and Shrove Tuesday.
The heart of the festival is the parade of allegorical floats, which travels through the town center starting from Piazza Dante and the Ville area. Alongside the floats, masked groups, dance schools, and costumed performers fill the streets with color and music. The traditional Sicilian masks of 'u nannu and a nanna are always presentโsymbolic figures that embody the very spirit of Carnival and its ritual farewell upon the arrival of Lent.
The Francofonte Carnival is designed especially for children: confetti throwing, entertainment, music, and masquerade balls mark the festive days. Among the most delightful events in recent editions is the four-legged parade, dedicated to costumed pets, which is always a huge hit with participants.
Like many carnivals in south-eastern Sicily, the Francofonte edition is rooted in the local farming and religious traditions, where the festival marked the final moment of abundance and joy before the Lenten fasts. Today, it represents a moment of community gathering and a way to rediscover the popular identity of this corner of the Syracuse province, bordering the areas of Catania and Enna.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Francofonte Carnival have not yet been officially announced. Based on previous editions, the festival traditionally takes place during the Carnival period, between Fat Thursday and Shrove Tuesday, with the parade of allegorical floats through the town center, the traditional 'u nannu and a nanna masks, masquerade balls, and entertainment for children. To stay updated on the calendar, we invite you to follow the official channels of the Francofonte Pro Loco and the Municipality.
