In the town of Usseglio, a stunning mountain village in the Metropolitan City of Turin tucked away at the end of the Viù Valley—one of the Lanzo Valleys—the Pro Loco organizes an event that is much more than just a dance party. The Franco-Provençal Dance Afternoon celebrates one of the most authentic souls of this corner of Piedmont: the Franco-Provençal culture, a linguistic and traditional heritage that unites alpine communities across Italy, France, and Switzerland.

What are Franco-Provençal dances?

Franco-Provençal dances are group dances that have accompanied the social life of alpine valleys for centuries. They are far more than mere entertainment: they represent a way to keep a minority language and an ancient culture alive, magically uniting participants regardless of age. Among the most beloved dances are the coureunta, danced in pairs in a circle with an alternation of walks, turns, and the characteristic final balèt, and the tèrhi, a lively dance performed by three pairs in a row with coordinated gallops and weaves.

Live music

The heart of the afternoon is the live music. Traditional instruments, from the diatonic accordion to the violin and the evocative, medieval-sounding hurdy-gurdy, set the rhythm for the dances and create the warm, participatory atmosphere that makes this type of gathering unique. You don't need to be an expert dancer: the invitation is simply to let yourself be guided and to join in the fun.
