The grand bonfire of vine shoots in honor of Saint Anthony the Abbot, blending faith and rural tradition in Salento

In the small town of Guagnano, in the Province of Lecce and the heart of the Salento wine region, winter lights up with one of the most deeply rooted traditions of the Apulian farming calendar: the Fòcara of Sant'Antonio Abate. Every year, on the last Sunday of January, the community gathers in Largo Pertini around an imposing bonfire made of vine shoots, raised in honor of the patron saint of animals and the countryside.
The Fòcara has its roots in the local farming culture. The vine shoots, collected during the winter pruning of the vineyards surrounding Guagnano, are stacked to form a large pyre. Their combustion is a ritual gesture charged with symbolism: the fire that warms and illuminates the cold night becomes a sign of hope, rebirth, and renewal for the agricultural year ahead. Saint Anthony the Abbot, celebrated by the Church on January 17th, has been the patron of domestic animals and the rural world for centuries, and his cult remains deeply alive in the towns of Salento.
The day begins with a procession accompanying the statue of Saint Anthony the Abbot along the main streets of the town until it reaches Largo Pertini. Here, the blessing and the lighting of the bonfire take place, welcomed by the warmth of the crowd and a fireworks display. Fire performers and live music are also present, transforming the evening into a moment of shared celebration. In some editions, among the flames of the pyre, the faithful have claimed to have recognized the image of the Saint, an episode that has fueled the fascination and devotion surrounding the event.
For Guagnano, the Fòcara is much more than a simple rite: it is a symbol of belonging and sharing that keeps the memory of the territory's farming roots alive and strengthens the community's bond with its history. The town, also known for its wines and the Sagra dell'Uva Cardinale, finds in this January night an opportunity to reunite through faith, folklore, and conviviality.
Located in the northern part of Salento, in the Province of Lecce, Guagnano is famous for its vineyards and a long winemaking tradition linked to Negroamaro and other native grape varieties. The Fòcara of Sant'Antonio Abate perfectly represents this unbreakable bond between the community and the land: it is the very shoots of the vines that produce Guagnano's wine that fuel the festival's fire, in a symbolic cycle that unites work, faith, and the collective memory of Apulia.
In 2026, the community of Guagnano, in the Province of Lecce, will once again renew the rite of the Fòcara of Sant'Antonio Abate in Largo Pertini. As per tradition, the evening will include a procession with the statue of the Saint through the town streets, the blessing, the lighting of the large bonfire of vine shoots, fireworks, and live music. At the moment, the official dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published: it is recommended to check for updates on the Municipality of Guagnano's channels and in the local Salento press closer to the event.
The bonfire and festivities are held in Largo Pertini, in the center of Guagnano (LE), in northern Salento.
Traditionally on the last Sunday of January, near the liturgical feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot (January 17th).
By car: Guagnano can be reached via the SS7ter and the provincial roads connecting Lecce, Novoli, and Salice Salentino. By train: the reference stations are those on the Lecce-Novoli line. The event is outdoors and free of charge.
