The fire ritual for Saint Anthony Abbot in Monteroni di Lecce
Every year, towards the end of January, the town of Monteroni di Lecce celebrates Saint Anthony Abbot with its Focara, the great ritual bonfire that concludes the festivities in honor of the patron saint of animals and the farming world. It is one of the most defining events of the winter calendar in Salento, in the province of Lecce, and is part of the long tradition of Fire Festivals that bring this territory to life in the heart of winter.
The devotion to Saint Anthony Abbot in Monteroni has roots in a tradition passed down for over a century, linked to rural culture and the protection of domestic and working animals. In 2026, the municipality achieved an important milestone: the inclusion of the festival in the Apulian Regional Register of historical fire festivals and rituals, which certifies its cultural and intangible value alongside other great Salento bonfires.
The main day combines religious moments with cultural offerings. In the morning, the traditional fair opens, alongside visits to historical sites such as the Baronial Palace and the small church dedicated to the saint. The blessing of the animals, the devotional heart of the festival, takes place after mass. The municipality also offers a walk through tradition and rural life, with guided tours to sites such as Villa Romano and the Apollonio Winery.
The most anticipated moment is in the evening: after mass, the procession winds through the town streets to the Focara area, where the massive bonfire is lit, accompanied by fireworks and the illumination of the squares. It is the act that gives the entire festival its name and meaning, gathering citizens and visitors around a fire that symbolizes purification and renewal.
The Focara of Monteroni is organized by the municipality in collaboration with the Maria SS. Assunta Parish and local volunteer associations. Beyond its religious value, it remains a moment of strong cohesion for the community in the province of Lecce, Puglia, capable of attracting visitors from neighboring towns and preserving a collective memory that is renewed every January around the flames.
The Focara of Saint Anthony Abbot 2026 was held in Monteroni di Lecce on January 25 and 26. On Sunday, the day began at 9:15 AM with the gathering and presentation of the program, a visit to the Baronial Palace, and the inauguration of the traditional fair. In the morning, the collection of brushwood took place, followed by the walk through tradition and rural life with guided tours of Villa Romano and the Apollonio Winery, and the blessing of the animals after mass.
In the afternoon, at 5:00 PM, the arrival of the "Maestro Rocco Quarta" band in Piazza Falconieri kicked off the evening events; at 6:00 PM, mass and the procession led to the Focara area for the lighting of the bonfire, accompanied by fireworks and the illumination of the squares. The festival concluded on Monday, January 26, with a thanksgiving mass at 6:00 PM. The 2026 edition also marked the festival's inclusion in the Apulian Regional Register of fire festivals.
