The Arielli Carnival

The Float Parade is the most anticipated event of the year in Arielli, a small hilltop town in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. Organized by Pro Loco Arielli, the event transforms the village streets for a day into a joyful procession of allegorical floats, masks, and colors, involving both adults and children in a deeply cherished local community celebration.

The floats and the parade

The heart of the event is the procession of allegorical floats, crafted with dedication and imagination by participating groups in the months leading up to the festival. The floats gather in the early afternoon near the former social winery square, the starting point for the parade that winds through the center of Arielli. Along the route, the public follows the carnival structures amidst music, confetti, and costumes, creating a festive atmosphere that engages the entire town.

Entertainment for children and families

The Arielli Carnival is specifically designed for families and children. During the parade and upon the arrival of the floats, the municipal hall hosts entertainers who keep the little ones busy with group dances, games, mascots, and cotton candy. It is a program tailored to make the day family-friendly, blending playfulness with the folk traditions of this Abruzzese village.

The burning of the effigy

The festival concludes with the traditional burning of the Carnival effigy, lit in the area in front of the bus stop. The burning of the effigy is a propitiatory rite common in many Italian Carnivals: it symbolically burns away winter and the hardships of the past year, marking the transition to the new season. It is the most evocative moment of the event, bringing the entire Arielli community together around the flames.

A deeply rooted tradition

Now in its eighteenth year, the Float Parade is an important part of Arielli's identity and, more broadly, of the carnival traditions of the small towns in the Chieti area. Participation with a float is open and free, subject to registration, and every year local groups and associations help keep this popular festival alive. Admission is free, and the event is part of the calendar of Carnivals promoted by the Pro Loco of Abruzzo.
