On the plateau of Castelluccio, a hamlet of Norcia in the province of Perugia, one of Italy's most extraordinary natural spectacles takes place every year between June and July: the Fioritura (Blooming). The fields cultivated with IGP Castelluccio lentils are coloured along with red poppies, blue cornflowers, violets, and wildflowers, painting the Piano Grande and Pian Piccolo with a palette that changes daily.
A phenomenon in the heart of the Sibillini
The Fioritura is located in the heart of the Monti Sibillini National Park, in a high-altitude landscape of rare beauty dominated by the village of Castelluccio. It is not a fixed-date event: the peak moment depends on the season's climate and usually occurs between mid-June and early July. For this reason, it is closely followed by hikers and photographers from all over Europe.
How to experience it
To best enjoy the phenomenon, guided excursions are organised along unusual routes, far from the most crowded paths. On weekends with high visitor numbers, direct access to Castelluccio is regulated by a traffic management plan, while on weekdays, access is generally free.
