The natural spectacle of flowers on the Piano Grande of the Monti Sibillini
On the plateau of Castelluccio, a hamlet of Norcia in the province of Perugia, one of Italy's most extraordinary natural spectacles takes place every year between June and July: the Fioritura (Blooming). The fields cultivated with IGP Castelluccio lentils are coloured along with red poppies, blue cornflowers, violets, and wildflowers, painting the Piano Grande and Pian Piccolo with a palette that changes daily.
The Fioritura is located in the heart of the Monti Sibillini National Park, in a high-altitude landscape of rare beauty dominated by the village of Castelluccio. It is not a fixed-date event: the peak moment depends on the season's climate and usually occurs between mid-June and early July. For this reason, it is closely followed by hikers and photographers from all over Europe.
To best enjoy the phenomenon, guided excursions are organised along unusual routes, far from the most crowded paths. On weekends with high visitor numbers, direct access to Castelluccio is regulated by a traffic management plan, while on weekdays, access is generally free. The Fioritura is a natural heritage that tells the agricultural and landscape identity of Norcia and the Apennine Umbria.
For the 2026 season, the moment of maximum splendour of the Fioritura di Castelluccio is expected, according to the usual trend, between the end of June and the first days of July. Guided excursions are planned on the Piano Grande from June 20th to July 5th, generally in the morning (9:30 AM - 1:30 PM).
Being a natural phenomenon, the precise dates of the peak colour remain indicative and depend on the season's climate. For weekends with high visitor numbers, a traffic management plan is in place, with direct access to Castelluccio regulated; on weekdays, access is generally free.
The Fioritura does not have a programme of events in the strict sense: it is a natural phenomenon. The organisation mainly concerns access and guided excursions:
The official schedule of access and shuttle services will be communicated closer to the season.
Castelluccio is a hamlet of Norcia (PG), reachable by car from the road that climbs from Norcia towards the Piano Grande (about 28 km). On peak weekends of the blooming, a traffic management plan is in effect with restrictions on direct access.
The phenomenon usually occurs between mid-June and early July, but the dates cannot be predicted precisely because they depend on the season.
Guided excursions are organised (also in the morning, 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM). Layered clothing and trekking shoes are recommended, given the altitude.
