The ancient village of Caselle in Pittari becomes an open-air museum
Every summer, the historic center of Caselle in Pittari, a small town of just over 1,800 inhabitants perched 444 meters above sea level in the province of Salerno, transforms into an open-air museum. This is the heart of Fiori alle Porte, a performing arts festival that has been working since 2016 on the alleys, squares, and especially the old wooden doors of the town: painted, decorated, and crossed by rhymes, folk songs, and proverbs collected from the community's oral memory. Here, you don't buy a ticket or enter a hall: you walk, get lost in the village, and encounter the works one after another.
The project began in 2016 as a street art experiment and has expanded over the years to become a true multidisciplinary festival, directed by artist Ramona Pisano and promoted by the Sab Kuch Milega Cultural Association with the support of the municipal administration. Alongside the paintings, there is space for street theater and scenic experiments curated by Neapolitan director Gianluca Guarino with his SperimentAzioni Teatrali Skm, as well as participatory workshops, storytelling, and mindfulness. A recurring figure is the town crier, who officially opens the festival with his proclamation: a tribute to Minicuccio, the last historic town crier of Caselle in Pittari.
The festival's name refers to a local custom that the project aimed to save from oblivion: the tradition of flowers, meaning the rhymes, folk songs, proverbs, playful insults, and serenades that were once passed down orally within Casellesi families. Those words, collected together with the elderly, return today transcribed on the doors and walls of the historic center alongside the artists' paintings. The result is a permanent urban route, visitable all year round, which intertwines contemporary art and the intangible heritage of a village in the Cilento hinterland.
From August 5 to 8, 2026, Fiori alle Porte celebrates its tenth edition. The theme chosen for the anniversary is «PORTA» (Door), a word rich in facets and meanings: threshold, passage, welcome, but also the verb that indicates what everyone carries with them. The inauguration is set for Wednesday, August 5, at 4:30 PM in the Urmo area, where the town crier's proclamation will mark the beginning of the new route. The edition's manifesto summarizes the spirit of the festival well: a work of art is never born from one person alone, but from the encounter between the inspiration of those who create it and the generosity of those who make it possible.
The tenth anniversary was prepared through a co-design process with the younger generation. On May 3 and 4, 2026, the Sab Kuch Milega association brought «Lu Cuntu 'ri Fiuri» to Caselle in Pittari, a workshop and participatory action that involved students from the Teodoro Gaza Institute together with Ramona Pisano and Gianluca Guarino: creative workshops, storytelling about the area, and a shared choice of the festival's messages. The initiative, free for families and funded under the PNRR for youth creativity, is not a separate event but an internal step on the journey toward August.
Fiori alle Porte is based on a unique economic model that the organizers call «The Alchemy of the Gift»: artists donate their works to the town, and the community of Caselle in Pittari reciprocates with hospitality, welcoming them into their homes, and providing raw materials. It is a system of reciprocity that explains why the festival has never had a ticket office and why the works remain on the streets as a shared heritage for all. A special register is made available to visitors to leave a thought, a message, or a signature.
The festival is inseparable from its landscape. Caselle in Pittari overlooks the Bussento valley, the river that crosses the territory before sinking underground near the Rupe, with its gaze turned toward Monte Cervati, the highest peak in Campania. We are in the Cilento National Park, in an area of small and stubborn villages where summer also brings the Palio del Grano, the Caselle Film Festival, and the emigrant festivals. Those who arrive for Fiori alle Porte find much more than an exhibition: an entire community that, for four days, tells its story through contemporary art.
The 2026 edition, scheduled from August 5 to 8, is the tenth anniversary: ten editions from 2016 to today that have rewritten the face of the historic center of Caselle in Pittari. The artistic direction remains entrusted to Ramona Pisano, supported by maestro Gianluca Guarino with the SperimentAzioni Teatrali Skm and the eclectic collective of Fiori alle Porte artists, with the Sab Kuch Milega Cultural Association and the municipal administration.
For the anniversary, a single word has been chosen, PORTA, rich in facets and meanings. It is the wooden door on which the festival has been painting for ten years, it is the threshold between inside and outside, between town and visitor, and it is also the verb 'to carry': what everyone carries with them and leaves for others. The edition's manifesto reminds us that a work of art is never born from one person alone, but from the encounter between the inspiration of those who create it and the generosity of those who make it possible.
The tenth anniversary was built with the community: on May 3 and 4, 2026, the workshop action «Lu Cuntu 'ri Fiuri» involved students from the Teodoro Gaza Institute in a co-design process with the artists, supported by PNRR funding dedicated to youth creativity and completely free for families.
Caselle in Pittari is located in the Cilento hinterland, in the province of Salerno, at an altitude of 444 meters. By car, exit the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway at Padula-Buonabitacolo and continue toward the Bussento valley. The nearest train station is Sapri, on the Tyrrhenian line, from which you can continue by car or local transport services; the reference airport is Naples-Capodichino.
The entire festival takes place in the ancient village: alleys, stairways, squares, and doors of the historic center. The 2026 opening is in the Urmo area. The route is on foot and on uneven stone surfaces: comfortable shoes are recommended.
Local sources do not report tickets: the visit to the open-air museum is free, according to the principle of the «Alchemy of the Gift» on which the event is based.
Evenings at this altitude can be cool even in August: bring a light sweater. For accommodation, it is best to look at B&Bs in the town and neighboring villages of the Bussento valley, or on the coast between Policastro Bussentino and Sapri, about thirty kilometers away.
