The Theatre Festival of Maratea between sky and sea
Born in 2014, the Marateatro Festival - Festival del Teatro di Maratea is one of the most anticipated events of the Lucanian summer. Directed by Giuseppe Miale Di Mauro, the festival brings great drama, music, and artistic contaminations to the most suggestive spots in Maratea, transforming squares, balconies, and parks into natural stages overlooking the sea and the mountains of the Tyrrhenian coast.
Part of the Maratea in Scena programme, the festival features shows ranging from reinterpretations of traditional Southern Italian music to singer-songwriter performances, from spoken word theatre to original productions. Over the years, Marateatro has hosted prominent names from the theatre and music scene, with a strong influence of Neapolitan tradition, building a lively dialogue between Neapolitan culture and the Lucanian territory.
The balcony of Piazza Buraglia, the parks, and the outdoor spaces of the village and nearby municipalities host the festival evenings, offering the public an experience that combines artistic quality and scenic beauty. Growing edition after edition thanks to the work of the organization, Marateatro is now a cultural reference point for the summer in the Province of Potenza and another reason to discover Maratea and the Tyrrhenian Basilicata.
The 2026 edition confirms Marateatro Festival as a key event of the Lucanian summer, part of the Maratea in Scena programme. For this edition too, the artistic direction of Giuseppe Miale Di Mauro proposes a programme that intertwines spoken word theatre, music, and original productions, bringing performances to the symbolic locations of the village, from the balcony of Piazza Buraglia to the parks overlooking the sea.
The detailed programme for the 2026 edition will be announced in the coming weeks.
Based on previous editions, the festival takes place between July and August and includes an opening evening (in recent years mid-July, with a concert from the balconies of Piazza Buraglia), theatre and music performances on multiple dates, and a closing event, with events also in nearby municipalities like Trecchina. Dates, titles, and venues are published on the official website marateatro.com and in the Maratea in Scena programme.
