White truffle takes centre stage in Lombardy

The Fiera Nazionale del Tartufo Bianco di Borgofranco sul Po is one of the most established gastronomic events in the province of Mantua. It takes place in the hamlet of Borgofranco sul Po, now part of the Municipality of Borgocarbonara, on the banks of the Po River, in that border strip where Lombardy meets Emilia and Veneto. Borgofranco is recognized as a City of Truffles, a title that testifies to the deep connection of the territory with the precious Tuber Magnatum Pico, the white truffle that grows wild in the riverside woods of the great river.

Thirty years of tradition

Founded in the 1990s, the Fair has surpassed thirty editions and is today the only national event of significance dedicated to truffles organized in Lombardy. What makes it special is the formula that distinguishes it from classic one-weekend sagre (local festivals): the event is held over three consecutive weekends in October, the period when the white truffle reaches its full maturity.

What awaits you

The heart of the Fair is the large covered gastronomic area set up in Piazza C. Malavasi, where volunteers from the Pro Loco of Borgofranco sul Po prepare a complete menu, from appetizer to dessert, inspired by Mantuan culinary tradition and enriched with truffles. Alongside the cuisine, you'll find exhibitors with local products:

• fresh truffles and truffle-based products;
• cured meats, preserves, and mustards from the area;
• traditional Mantuan sweets;
• local wines and craft beers.

The program also includes meetings, guided tastings, and experiences related to the discovery of the riverside territory, its floodplain landscapes, and truffle culture. A visit to the Fair is also an opportunity to explore the Oltrepò Mantovano, a land of dykes, poplar groves, and villages overlooking the Po.

Borgocarbonara, borderland

Borgocarbonara is a young municipality, created in 2019 from the merger of Borgofranco sul Po and Carbonara di Po, in the province of Mantua. Visiting the Fair means immersing yourself in the authentic atmosphere of the Bassa region, where autumn fog, the aroma of truffles, and river cuisine create an unforgettable gastronomic experience.
