Handmade fettuccine from the Roman Tuscia: a blend of flavors, sports, and music in Canale Monterano
The Fettuccine Festival is the most anticipated summer event in Canale Monterano, a small town in the province of Rome (Lazio), overlooking the forests of the Monterano Regional Nature Reserve. Passionately organized by the Contrada Casenove, the festival turns Piazza Caduti di Nassiriya into a large open-air dining room every year, where the aroma of hand-rolled fettuccine mingles with live music and the joy of summer evenings.
The undisputed stars are the handmade fettuccine, prepared according to ancient local rural recipes. Every evening, the food stalls offer the pasta in numerous variations: country-style, with porcini mushrooms, wild boar ragรน, sausage and truffle, tomato and basil, and the classic cacio e pepe. The menu is completed by appetizers featuring bruschetta, local cured meats and cheeses, and traditional main courses such as snails, Roman-style tripe, wild boar stew, and mixed grilled meats.
The festival is also a showcase for the excellence of Canale Monterano. During the evenings, you can discover and taste the town's signature products, such as Pane Storicoโa saltless bread baked in a wood-fired oven according to ancient traditionโand the extra virgin olive oil from the surrounding hills, both authentic hallmarks of Lazio's culinary heritage.
Beyond fine dining, the event offers a rich calendar of activities. Every evening, live music enlivens the amphitheater adjacent to the square, with bands and groups accompanying dinner until late. Sunday morning is dedicated to outdoor sports, with the Casenove Run and mountain bike rides through the trails and ruins of ancient Monterano, in a successful fusion of gastronomic celebration and outdoor living.
Attending the Fettuccine Festival is also the perfect opportunity to visit one of the most evocative places in Lazio: the ancient village of Monterano, a ghost town abandoned in the 18th century, featuring the remains of the castle, the aqueduct, and the church designed by Bernini, all nestled within the nature reserve. A spectacular landscape that provides the backdrop for a festival capable of telling the most authentic soul of the Roman Tuscia.
In 2026, the Fettuccine Festival celebrated its twentieth edition, an important milestone for the Contrada Casenove and the entire community of Canale Monterano. From June 26 to 28, Piazza Caduti di Nassiriya hosted food stalls, live music, and the sports initiatives that now characterize the event, in a three-day celebration marked by tradition and conviviality.
Opening of food stalls in Piazza Caduti di Nassiriya from 7:30 PM, with table service and dinner featuring handmade fettuccine in various versions. Live music with bands and groups at the amphitheater adjacent to the square.
Special evening dedicated to the festival's twentieth anniversary and the commitment of the Contrada Casenove volunteers, at the village amphitheater.
In the morning, sports events with the Casenove Run (competitive and non-competitive race, with a track dedicated to children among the ruins of ancient Monterano) and mountain bike rides through the nature reserve trails. Followed by a lunch dedicated to the athletes and, in the evening, the final dinner of the festival with a concluding concert.
By car: from Rome, you can reach Canale Monterano via the Via Braccianese and the SP Monteranese in about an hour. By train: take the Rome-Viterbo (FL3) line to Bracciano, then local bus connections to Canale Monterano. By plane: Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino airports are about an hour away.
Admission to the festival is free. Food stalls open in the evening starting at 7:30 PM, with table service available. Sports activities are scheduled for Sunday morning.
The square gets very busy on weekends: booking tables through the Contrada Casenove organizers is recommended. Combine your dinner with a walk to the ancient village of Monterano and the nature reserve.
