In Valpelline, the festival of the bread and Fontina soup, one of the oldest in the Aosta Valley
The Festival of Seupa à la Vapelenentse is one of the most deeply rooted gastronomic festivals in the Aosta Valley. It takes place in Valpelline, a village in the Great St. Bernard valley, and revolves around an iconic dish: Seupa à la Vapelenentse, the soup that bears the village's name.
The Seupa originates from peasant cuisine focused on using leftovers: stale white bread and Fontina cheese are layered, moistened with broth, covered with melted butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon, then slowly baked. The result is a warm, comforting, and hearty dish, now recognized with the Communal Designation of Origin which protects its authentic preparation.
With over fifty editions held, the festival follows a tried-and-tested program: the opening evening on Friday with music, Holy Masses, large communal lunches and dinners featuring Seupa on the weekend, dancing evenings with live bands, and performances by animation groups. On Monday, the event concludes with the patronal feast.
Valpelline is also the gateway to a fascinating alpine valley: here you can find the Fontina Museum and the Resistance Museum, as well as trails along the Ru Pompillard. For the Aosta Valley Region, Seupa represents one of the flagship dishes of its tradition, and its festival is the perfect opportunity to discover it where it was born.
The 56th Festival of Seupa à la Vapelenentse enlivens Valpelline from Friday, July 24 to Monday, July 27, 2026. The Pro Loco prepares the Seupa — stale white bread and Fontina cheese, broth, melted butter, and cinnamon, baked — served during the large communal meals on Saturday and Sunday.
The program alternates religious and convivial moments: Holy Masses, lunches and dinners featuring Seupa, dancing evenings with live bands, performances by the village's philharmonic band and animation groups. The festival concludes on Monday with the patronal celebrations. A gluten-free menu is also available.
Indicative program based on the usual structure of the festival: any updates on the Pro Loco of Valpelline channels.
Valpelline can be reached from Aosta by driving up the Great St. Bernard valley (approx. 15 km). By car is the most practical means; during the festival days, parking areas are set up near the event grounds.
Last weekend of July, until the Monday of the patronal feast. 2026 Edition: July 24-27.
Free admission; lunches and dinners featuring Seupa are charged according to the Pro Loco's price list. Gluten-free menu available.
