The patronal feast of Sinagra: a blend of faith, history, and the famous run of Saint Leo
The Festival of Saint Leo is the most important religious and popular celebration in Sinagra, a small town in the Nebrodi hinterland in the Province of Messina, Sicily. Every year, around May 8th, the entire community gathers around the statue of the patron saint in an event that weaves together devotion, historical memory, and local festivities. Since 2008, the event has been inscribed in the Registry of Intangible Heritage (REI) of the Sicily Region, a recognition that protects its cultural and identity value.
According to tradition, Saint Leo, known as the Wonder-Worker, was born in Ravenna in 710 and was appointed bishop of Catania in 765. Forced to take refuge in the mountains, he reportedly spent several years as a hermit in a cave in the Vallone d'Orecchia, in the territory of Sinagra. A legend tells of his encounter with the Devil along the path to the village, during which the saint traced a cross on the rock to repel the Evil One. Around 1450, Saint Leo was proclaimed the patron saint of Sinagra, starting the celebrations that are still renewed today.
The heart of the festival is the two processions on May 8th: the statue is carried on the shoulders of the faithful through the streets of the medieval village, starting from the Mother Church. The most anticipated moment is the run of Saint Leo, between Via Vittorio Veneto and Piazza San Teodoro, which evokes an ancient custom: the litter is moved in rapid bursts, the so-called miracoli i Santu Liu, accompanied by the classic slow-paced movement with "two steps forward and one back," symbolizing the saint's indecision about returning to Catania.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers its more popular side: the marches and concerts of the "Vincenzo Bellini" Band of Sinagra, evening shows in the square with comedians and variety artists provided by the Municipal Administration, and the grand fireworks display that closes the festivities before midnight. Devotion to Saint Leo is also renewed at other times of the year, such as the evocative torchlight procession on Easter evening and the commemoration on February 20th.
More than just a religious feast, the Festival of Saint Leo is an identity-defining event that draws emigrants, visitors, and devotees from the entire Nebrodi district to Sinagra. Between faith, history, and spectacle, it represents one of the most authentic collective rites in the Messina province.
The 2026 edition of the Festival of Saint Leo in Sinagra (Province of Messina) was divided into two main days.
Thursday, May 7th (eve): at 6:00 PM, Holy Mass in the Mother Church with the presentation of the children for First Confession and First Communion, followed by the Eucharistic procession from the Mother Church to the Church of the Crucifix; in the evening, in Piazza San Teodoro, the first edition of "A Talent for Saint Leo".
Friday, May 8th (patron saint's day): at 10:30 AM, solemn celebration and procession of the relic of the Holy Cross and Saint Leo, with a stop at the cemetery; in the afternoon, the traditional and grueling city route with the run of the statue; at 9:00 PM, return to the Mother Church and Eucharistic blessing; at 9:30 PM, the comedy show by Uccio De Santis; just before midnight, the fireworks display by the Castorino company. The festival was accompanied by the marches of the "Vincenzo Bellini" Band of Sinagra, conducted by Maestro Giuseppe Mancuso. The final raffle was held on Sunday, May 17th.
Sinagra is located in the Nebrodi hinterland, in the Province of Messina. By car, it can be reached from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Brolo or Patti exit, then continuing inland along the SS113 and provincial roads. The nearest train station is Brolo-Ficarra, on the Messina-Palermo line.
The main festivities take place on May 7th and 8th, with religious and civil events in the historic center and Piazza San Teodoro.
Religious celebrations, processions, and performances in the square are free of charge.
