The feast of Otranto's co-patron saint, featuring processions, illuminations, and Salento traditions
The Festival of Saint Francis of Paola is one of the most deeply rooted religious and popular events in the calendar of Otranto, a city in the Province of Lecce overlooking the channel that bears its name, at the eastern tip of Puglia. Saint Francis of Paola, originally from Calabria, is venerated as the co-patron of the city alongside the famous Holy Martyrs. While the liturgical feast falls on April 2nd, the city celebration is traditionally held on a Sunday in May, with the date varying from year to year.
Otranto's devotion to the Saint is rooted in the city's dramatic history. According to tradition, in 1480, Saint Francis of Paola warned King Alfonso of Aragon about the dangers looming over Otranto, shortly before the terrible Turkish siege that led to the martyrdom of eight hundred citizens. In gratitude and remembrance, the city elected him co-patron, preserving his cult to this day.
The heart of the festival is the procession that starts from the Colle dei Martiri and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dei Martiri, crossing the historic center to reach Porta Terra, the ancient entrance to the walled city. Here, the most evocative and symbolic ritual, dating back to the 17th century, takes place: the handing over of the city keys to the Saint by the Mayor, in the presence of the Archbishop of Otranto, civil and military authorities, and the Cathedral Chapter. The Eucharistic celebration in the Cathedral Basilica concludes the most solemn liturgical moment.
Alongside the sacred dimension, the festival retains all the warmth of Salento's traditional feasts. The Minerva district and Largo Minerva are decked out with traditional luminarie (light displays) and market stalls, while the civil program features brass band concertsโwith the participation of prestigious Apulian touring bands like the one from Castellana Grotteโpop music performances, and, to close the festivities, a fireworks display over the sea, often set up near the Molo San Nicola. A blend of faith, music, and conviviality that makes the Festival of Saint Francis of Paola a perfect opportunity to discover Otranto and its most authentic soul.
The 2026 Festival of Saint Francis of Paola took place in Otranto on Sunday, May 31, and Monday, June 1, in line with the custom that sets the festivities on the last Sunday of May. The city renewed its devotion to its co-patron with the traditional blend of religious rites and popular festivities in the Minerva district.
The heart of the celebrations was the procession with the image of the Saint and the evocative handing over of the city keys at Porta Terra, a symbolic gesture repeated for centuries, in the presence of civil, military, and religious authorities.
The Minerva district hosted illuminations, market stalls, and the usual civil program with brass band concerts and a fireworks display to close the festivities.
The festival takes place on a Sunday in May (the date varies each year, usually the last Sunday of the month). The program spans two days, preceded by a three-day period of preparation (triduum).
