The patron saint's festival in the megalithic garden of Salento

In Giurdignano, a small town in the province of Lecce in the heart of lower Salento, the San Rocco Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event of the summer. For three days in mid-August, the village is transformed: streets and squares light up with characteristic luminarie (artistic light displays) crafted by local artisans—an art form for which the town is particularly renowned—while stalls, music, and popular devotion animate the historic center from morning until late at night.
San Rocco, a pilgrim and healer from Montpellier, is venerated as a protector against epidemics and the plague. According to local tradition, the Saint saved Giurdignano from contagion, and the community dedicates this festival to him. The symbolic heart of the festivities is the Votive Column of San Rocco, which stands in the central Piazza Municipio: built in 1772 from Lecce stone, it bears the polychrome statue of the Saint at its summit. Tradition holds that it was commissioned as an ex-voto by a ship's captain who survived a plague that had decimated most of his crew.
The traditional program combines religious rites and civic events:
The festival is also an opportunity to discover one of the most fascinating villages in Salento. Giurdignano is known as the "megalithic garden of Italy" due to the exceptional concentration of menhirs and dolmens scattered throughout its territory—over twenty-five monuments testifying to ancient human settlement. The town, which also boasts Byzantine crypts and the tradition of the Tables of Saint Joseph, is part of the Association of Truffle Cities. This setting makes the patronal festivities an authentic Apulian experience, blending faith, tradition, and heritage.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the San Rocco Patronal Feast in Giurdignano have not yet been announced. As per tradition, the festivities are expected to return in mid-August, featuring artisanal illuminations, a procession, brass band concerts, and a fireworks display. The detailed program is usually released by the Patronal Festival Committee in the weeks leading up to the event: check back on this page to find out the dates, the guest singer, and confirmed events.
The festivities take place in the historic center of Giurdignano (LE), with the epicenter in Piazza Municipio, where the Votive Column of San Rocco stands.
Giurdignano is located in lower Salento, a few kilometers from Otranto and Uggiano la Chiesa. By car, it can be reached via the SS16 Maglie-Otranto road. The nearest train stations are in Maglie and Otranto (Ferrovie del Sud Est). The reference airport is Brindisi.
The patronal feast takes place in public spaces and is free to attend.
