Two days of faith, tradition, and music in the heart of Alta Irpinia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, usually on the second weekend of September, the small town of Morra De Sanctis โ home to just over a thousand inhabitants in the hills of Alta Irpinia, in the province of Avellino โ dedicates two days to the Festival in honor of Saint Gerard Majella. As the local municipality notes, it is the event that "somehow closes the summer": following the patronal feast of Saint Roch in August, this celebration marks the transition to autumn and brings the community, devotees from nearby towns, and emigrants back for the holidays together in the square one last time.
Devotion to Saint Gerard Majella is deeply rooted in Morra De Sanctis because just a few kilometers away, in the Materdomini area of the municipality of Caposele, stands the great Redemptorist sanctuary dedicated to the Saint, a destination for hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year. Gerard Majella, a lay brother of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer who died in Materdomini in 1755, is invoked throughout Campania as the protector of mothers and children: a patronage that explains the intense participation of families in the Morra celebrations.
The heart of the festival takes place in the Mother Church, the building restored after the severe damage of the Irpinia earthquake on November 23, 1980, which claimed the lives of dozens of people in Morra De Sanctis and changed the face of the village forever. In recent editions, the liturgical calendar has included:
The religious program is always accompanied by secular festivities, which focus on Piazza Francesco De Sanctis, named after the great literary critic and Minister of Education born in Morra in 1817. The two evenings are enlivened by folk groups, bands, and pop music concerts, often featuring nationally renowned artists. In recent years, the stage has hosted Gli Alunni del Sole and Marta de Marino (2025), singer-songwriter Michele Pecora together with the folk group Amici di Balera and the "Cittร di Pannarano" band (2024), and in the past, percussionist Tony Esposito, with a fireworks display closing the night of festivities.
Those arriving in Morra De Sanctis during these days will find a town dressed for the occasion, with lights illuminating the main streets, stalls selling sweets and toys along the procession route, and the scent of Irpinian gastronomy: caciocavallo cheese, cured meats, local grain bread, and the wines of Alta Irpinia, land of Taurasi and high-altitude whites. Participation is free and the atmosphere remains that of a genuine village festival, where religious ritual and evening entertainment blend seamlessly.
Situated at an altitude of about 850 meters, the village overlooks the Ofanto valley and is in turn dominated by the remains of the Biondi-Morra castle. A visit can easily be combined with the Francesco De Sanctis house museum, the Materdomini sanctuary in Caposele, the springs of the Sele river, and the towns of inland Campania affected by the 1980 earthquake and now reborn. For visitors arriving from outside the region, the Saint Gerard Majella Festival is an authentic opportunity to discover a Campania far from the coast, made of mountains, popular devotion, and hospitality.
As of the writing of this sheet, no official dates or program have been published for the 2026 edition of the Festival in honor of Saint Gerard Majella in Morra De Sanctis, in the province of Avellino. The municipality indicates the second weekend of September as the usual period for the festival, consistent with the last documented editions.
As per tradition, the program will be spread over two days and will alternate the religious part โ masses in the Mother Church and a solemn procession with the Saint's statue through the village streets โ with the secular part, featuring free evening concerts in Piazza Francesco De Sanctis. The detailed calendar is usually released by the festival committee and the Municipality of Morra De Sanctis in the weeks preceding the event.
Those wishing to participate can contact the Municipality directly (phone +39 0827 43021) or follow the local information channels of Alta Irpinia, which publish the poster with times, celebrants, and musical guests every year.
