The patron saint of Cavazzo Carnico in the heart of Carnia
In the heart of Carnia, the northernmost mountain region of Friuli, the village of Cavazzo Carnico cherishes an ancient devotion to San Rocco, its patron saint. The patronal festival is celebrated every year on August 16th, the liturgical day of the pilgrim saint, protector against the plague and invoked by Alpine rural communities.
The focus of the day is the religious dimension: the solemn mass and the procession that winds through the village bring together the inhabitants and the many Carnic emigrants who return to the village precisely for this summer anniversary. In Cavazzo, moreover, it is the Church of San Rocco itself—a valuable 18th-century building with a tripartite portico, which hosts concerts for the Carniarmonie festival—that testifies to the deep bond between the community and its protector.
Cavazzo Carnico overlooks the Lago dei Tre Comuni (Lake Cavazzo), the largest natural lake in the region, nestled among the Carnia mountains and a popular destination for swimming and water sports in the summer season. The San Rocco festival, falling in mid-August, takes place during the village's liveliest period, when the Carnic valleys welcome visitors and hikers.
Participating in the San Rocco patronal festival means connecting with the most authentic Carnia, the one of popular religious traditions, family ties, and a mountain territory proud of its identity. It is an intimate and communal event, far from the big festivals, but all the more precious for it.
In 2026, the San Rocco festival falls on Sunday, August 16th, the fixed liturgical date of the patron saint. The community of Cavazzo Carnico gathers around the traditional religious celebration, a central event of the Carnic summer and an occasion for residents and emigrants to reunite.
The detailed program will be announced by the parish in the weeks preceding the anniversary. Based on tradition, the patronal festival includes:
Cavazzo Carnico can be reached from the SS 52 state road and the A23 motorway (Carnia exit). The village overlooks the Lago dei Tre Comuni.
