Flavours, traditions, and culture in the heart of Domicella
Festa Fresca is the summer event that the Pro Loco Domicella APS dedicates to the authentic flavours of Irpinia and the traditions of the Vallo di Lauro. It takes place in late July in the municipality of Domicella, a town of fewer than two thousand inhabitants in the province of Avellino, at the western edge of inland Campania, where the Nolana plain meets the first slopes of the Apennines.
The name says it all: it is a festival designed for July evenings, when the heat subsides and the village spills out into the streets. No massive stages or big-name headliners here: the value lies in the sense of community, home-cooked food, and the rediscovery of the old village. It is one of the most successful formats for an Irpinian village festival, one that doesn't need to be over-the-top to work.
For two evenings, the historic centre of Domicella transforms into a meeting place for residents and visitors alike. The heart of the event is Piazza Vincenzo Ferrante, but the route extends through stone alleys, ancient archways, and picturesque corners of the old town, decorated with lights and food stations. You walk, you stop, you taste: the format is that of a scattered itinerary rather than a fenced-off area, allowing you to discover corners of the village that go unnoticed the rest of the year.
In recent editions, the village's historic wine cellars have also been opened for the occasion, becoming stops for taste and memory where you can sample local wines, traditional products, and experience the genuine hospitality of the locals. Alongside the food stands, there is space for artistic crafts and small-scale local produce.
The food and wine trail focuses on local flavours, with particular attention to the hazelnutโa historic crop of this hilly strip between the Avellino and Naples areasโand local recipes. Recent menus have featured dishes that perfectly capture the area's popular cuisine:
Everything is accompanied by local wines: we are in Irpinia, one of Italy's most important wine-producing provinces, and even a village festival can become a small taste of that heritage.
The soundtrack is provided by live folk music, with local bands and artists enlivening the squares until late at night with tammurriate, ballads, and traditional Campanian repertoire. Completing the picture are entertainment, shows, and moments dedicated to rediscovering the village's history.
One of the most anticipated events is the historical pageant: participants in period costumes walk through the historic centre, re-enacting moments from Domicella's past and bringing back, for a few hours, the atmosphere of a village that long relied on agriculture, artisanal trades, and neighbourhood life.
Domicella is a small town in the Vallo di Lauro, the westernmost area of the province of Avellino, historically linked to hazelnut cultivation and overlooking the plain leading towards Nola and the Naples area. In this context, the Pro Loco plays a role that goes beyond organizing the event: Festa Fresca is also a time for the community to reunite, for emigrants to return, and for the historic centre to be lived in and walked through once again.
The event is promoted by Sistema Irpinia, the event portal of the Province of Avellino, and has become a staple in the calendars of Irpinian food and wine festivals in July. For those visiting inland Campania in summer, it is a direct and non-touristy way to connect with the local area.
Festa Fresca is suitable for families, couples, and groups of friends: you eat well for little money, you walk, and you listen to music outdoors. It is an evening that also works well for those staying in the Nola, Lauro, or Baiano areas who are looking for an authentic alternative to the more crowded coastal destinations.
For the 2026 edition, the Pro Loco Domicella APS brought Festa Fresca back to the historic centre of the village on the weekend of July 25 and 26. The Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino listed the event in the window from July 24 to 26, while the presentation text and Irpinian event calendars confirmed the two main evenings on Saturday and Sunday.
The format remained the one that made the event recognizable: the historic centre transformed into a meeting place, a scattered itinerary through alleys, squares, and historic spots, and a gastronomic trail built on local products, with particular attention to hazelnuts and local Vallo di Lauro recipes.
Alongside the food stands, there was live folk music, entertainment, and shows, along with moments dedicated to rediscovering the history of Domicella. The historical pageant, with participants in period costumes re-enacting moments from the past, was announced as one of the most anticipated highlights of the programme.

The evenings generally start after 8:00 PM and continue until late. There is no entrance fee for the event: tastings are paid for directly at the stands, with typical village festival prices.
