The saint who saved the village from the plague

In Sasso di Castalda, a picturesque village in the Lucanian Apennines in the province of Potenza, devotion to Saint Roch has ancient and deep roots: the community attributes its salvation from the plague to the saint, and for this reason venerates him as protector. The cult is expressed twice a year, on May 16th and August 16th, but it is the summer festival, that of August 16th, that represents the main celebration, capable of attracting emigrants, relatives, and visitors to the village.

The procession and the supplication

The heart of the day is the solemn procession of the statue of Saint Roch through the village streets. The liturgical procession winds through prayers, moments of reflection, and music from the band; at the center of the procession, by tradition, a young person reads the supplication to the saint, in a gesture that links generations and renews the community's pact of faith each year. It is an intense ritual, where the religious dimension intertwines with the identity of the village.

Fair, concerts, and fireworks in the night

Alongside the sacred rites, the festival offers its popular side: the fair along the village streets, stalls, and especially the concerts organized by the Comitato Feste San Rocco (Saint Roch Festival Committee), which liven up the evenings. The day concludes late at night with fireworks, the light show that illuminates the sky above Sasso di Castalda and seals the most heartfelt festival of the year.

An event of the Lucanian summer

The Festa di San Rocco is much more than a religious observance: it is the moment when Sasso di Castalda comes together, welcomes those who return for the summer, and showcases the best of its traditions. Between faith, music, and conviviality, it represents one of the most characteristic events of the Lucanian Apennines in the heart of August.
