The patronal festival of Baragiano in honour of Saint Roch, between procession, faith and tradition
Saint Roch is among the most venerated saints in Basilicata, invoked as a protector against epidemics and patron saint of numerous villages in the region. In Baragiano, a small municipality in the province of Potenza overlooking the Marmo Platano area, the festival in his honour is celebrated on August 16th and is one of the most heartfelt moments of the year for the entire community.
The cult of Saint Roch in Basilicata has been documented for centuries and is traditionally linked to protection from plagues. In Baragiano, the festival retains the typical characteristics of Lucanian popular religiosity, with the distinctive "cente" – votive offerings of grain or candles – carried as a sign of a vow.
The focal point of the day is the procession with the wooden statue of the saint, which winds through the streets of the historic centre accompanied by liturgical chants, the band, and moments of prayer. Alongside the religious part, the civil celebrations liven up the town with musical performances, food stalls, and opportunities for socialising.
The festival of Saint Roch also represents the major summer event of return for Baragiano: numerous emigrants come back to the town, and visitors arrive from neighbouring municipalities, making August 16th a day of strong community cohesion. Promoted by the parish with the support of the Municipality of Baragiano, it maintains the unbroken link between faith, identity, and tradition.
In 2026 too, Baragiano will pay homage to its patron saint Saint Roch on August 16th, with the usual blend of religious celebrations – culminating in the procession with the wooden statue – and civil events that liven up the town in the heart of summer.
The detailed programme will be announced in the coming weeks by the parish of Baragiano and the Municipality. The festival structure traditionally includes: solemn masses in the days leading up to August 16th, the procession with the statue of Saint Roch through the streets of the historic centre accompanied by the band, and a series of evening musical performances with food stalls.
Baragiano is reachable from the Sicignano-Potenza motorway junction (Baragiano exit); it is about a 30-minute drive from Potenza. There is a train station at Baragiano Scalo.
All religious and civil events are free admission.
