Devotion to Saint Roch and the votive "cente" in Savoia di Lucania
Savoia di Lucania, a village in the Province of Potenza nestled among the Marmo Platano-Melandro mountains, is deeply connected to the figure of Saint Roch, its protector. Devotion is renewed three times a year โ on May 16th, August 16th, and December 16th โ but it is the mid-August summer anniversary that draws the largest participation, with emigrants and visitors returning to the village for the occasion.
The core identity of the festival lies in the devotional centa: a wooden structure supporting white wax candles adorned with flowers and colorful ribbons. Devotees carry it balanced on their heads during the procession, bowing three times as a gesture of offering and thanksgiving to the saint. It is an ancient, arduous, and deeply meaningful rite that connects generations and keeps the collective memory of the village alive.
The care for this intangible heritage is also evidenced by the "Murales della Tradizione" (Murals of Tradition) project, promoted by the association Savoia Terra Mia. Among the works, a mural by street artist Antonino Perrotta (Attorrep) depicts the offering of candles to Saint Roch during the procession, with verses from the devotional song in the Savoia dialect. The initiative preserves songs, images, and traditions that accompany the festival.
Alongside the religious moment, the Saint Roch festival is enlivened by a solemn procession, the accompaniment of the brass band, illuminations, markets, and an evening fireworks display. It is the event where Savoia di Lucania comes together around its identity, between popular faith and village conviviality.
For 2026, the patronal festival of Saint Roch in Savoia di Lucania returns on the main date of August 16th, the heart of the three annual anniversaries (May 16th, August 16th, December 16th) dedicated to the patron saint.
The day revolves around the solemn Mass and the procession with the characteristic cente carried on the heads of devotees, accompanied by the band. In the evening, illuminations and a fireworks display conclude the celebrations.
The detailed program with times for masses, procession, band concerts, and fireworks will be announced by the Municipality of Savoia di Lucania and the parish in the weeks preceding the event. The traditional structure includes:
