Saint Roch, protector of Castelmezzano

Saint Roch is the patron saint of Castelmezzano, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, nestled among the spires of the Lucanian Dolomites in the Province of Potenza. Protector of the town since 1769, Saint Roch is celebrated with the most heartfelt festival of the year, on August 16th (with celebrations extending to the following days). The statue of the saint is housed in the Mother Church of Santa Maria dell'Olmo, a building of 13th-century origin that also preserves a valuable polyptych dedicated to Saint Roch.

Devotion and legend

The village's devotion to its patron saint is also fueled by a captivating tradition: it is said that in the early 19th century, the image of Saint Roch saved Castelmezzano from the reprisal of French troops. The commanding officer, recognizing in the saint the protector of his hometown, decided to spare the village. Episodes like this have deeply rooted the cult of Saint Roch in the community's identity.

Atmosphere and context

The heart of the festival is the solemn procession of the statue through the steep streets of the village, accompanied by a band concert and, in the evening, by fireworks that illuminate the rocky spires.
